Software Choices

Hi everyone

I'm just wondering what game engine I should use for my next multiplayer map.

I have fooled around a little bit with Sandbox 2 (crysis) but I feel like the multiplayer community for that game isn't as big as something like Unreal Tournament 3. Also I'm sure there are many others that I haven't heard about. If you suggest one it would be great to hear some information on it.

Thank you!

According to Gamespy's stats, Crysis actually has about 100 more players than Unreal Tournament 3 (both still pitifully low player counts, though).
Call of Duty 4 is probably the newest game with a large player base, and I think they released their editing tools and some sample maps, so you could make some for that.

I can't resist a plug to Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, too... apparently we have a player base higher than Crysis and UT3 combined, and there's a fairly active mapping community over at the ETQW Community Forums.

Of course, there's always Counter Strike, but even CS:Source is looking a little dated these days. There's a fair few HL2 mods which have a decent player base and could do with some maps.

For some retro mapping, there's always Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - no normal maps or highpoly things for that, though :)

If you decide to go down the Source route, check out Team Fortress 2, there's a rabid fan base that eats custom maps like crack sprinkled cupcakes. I think Day of Defeat Source is fairly active but I think the majority of Valve fans are hooked on the TF2.
