Question... since I'm sure all of you cat owners out there have home computers.. wtf do you do to stop your cat from wrecking havoc on the cords and starting a fire? My cat is playing donkey kong jr. with climbing up my cords.
i had a rabbit that used to run around while i worked, used to dissapear behind the computer when i wasnt looking, it took a monitor cable, wacom lead, and a mouse lead bitten right through befor i learnt my lesson, and put a fence up round my computer, wont work with a cat though.
There are probably a few substances that work "opposite to catnip" and repel a cat from somewhere. I never used something like that tho, so no idea how well they work.
Better consult some pet-shop or a vet about that .
Whenever he does it hiss at him or make some angry noise. If your are consistent the cat should learn to stay away from them but will try it every now and then to test you. If you try the water bottle trick make sure you don't start a fire.
i think you can get some kind of cat repellent spray that u can just spray on the cords and the cat won't go anywhere near them... and just keep spraying them every once in awhile...
I used some stuff from the pet store when we first got our cat, it wasn't the bitter apple that Spitty suggested, but did the same thing. I can't quite remember the name of it though. After I used it she hasn't seemed interested in the cables. If you ask someone at a local pet store I'm sure they can direct you towards the right stuff.
When I saw the subject I was hoping this was a "show off how great your cat is" thread. =(
Dried cayenne peppers placed on the floor. It works for dogs who sniff around too much, and would probably work for a cat. They cant stand the stuff (rightfully so). You might want to test it out in a controlled space just in case your cat decides to eat the whole thing :P
muhahaha. found a spray that works...! Wish I would have know about this stuff as a kid. I would have sprayed myself down to protect myself from the neighbor cat.
Can't canned air burn your skin if it's sprayed directly though? Or maybe that's just if it's done continuously or something. I never tried it (because that would hurt) but I was using some at work once and someone mentioned it. Might have been just a rumor or something though.

nothing. cats are the spawn of satan. I've had numerous cats over the years...and I've found that each one has it's own personality....if it's gonna be crazy and wreck your home...it's gonna be crazy and wreck your home. Sooner or later it will calm down. Stay the hell away from catnip....it's like making crazy cat into SUPER crazy cat. Get it something to scratch/destroy, like a cat tower/scratching post. Getting it "fixed" also seems to calm them down a bit. All I know is...I'm ready for a dog.
Make sure your cat has what it needs. So it can do what cats do without getting in trouble. All cats think they need to do something but so far for me its been something different with each cat. Chew, lay around, run around, hunt. Sounds like you have a chewer, and chewers find something else to chew on, best if its an approved thing, otherwise they'll just get good at hiding it.
Don't think that you can cure your cat of whatever it is they are doing wrong with one loud display of power. It normally works best if it seems to come from no where. That way its likely to continue to not do whatever it is, even when you're not around. You also get a chance to step up the threat if you start out soft. If you jump right to hardcore you missed out on being able to warn your cat later. With 3 out of the 4 we've had just saying "CAT, what are you doing?" is enough to make them choose another activity.
They also expect that every threat after the first meet or exceed the previous level as they will continue to push. If you dial it down they think they are winning. If you've already blown it by freaking out, they're more likely to call your bluff, or try to force you to do something extreme. A freak out also bruises their ego and they're more then likely going to plot revenge.
Once these three are gone, we're getting a dog. I can't wait to get back to having something that CAN rip your throat out but never would. As opposed to something that would, but can't.
also yeah get a spray bottle and get to using a very consistent hissing sound that you only use when you want the cat to not do something, works a treat

he'll figure it out eventually
Worked for me
seriously, the other thing you gotta worry about is the fucking POUNDS of cat hair that floats around the air, and makes its way into your fans.
Haven't had a problem with him chewing on wires, more just trying to multiply himself by shedding, inside my computer.

no matter how much catspray I put on those cables, she still does it because she knows she'll get attention.
