Hey there! Been a while since I posted something here... Been busy with some projects in school and my summerjob, but now I got a few days off, so I though I might do something productive! ^_^
I've been wanting to do a Wipeout ship for aaages now and I browsed the web for some good references and inspiration etc and I found that the Icaras team had the coolest colours and design.. Tightly followed by the Feisar Team.
Anyways.. I decided to go high poly on this for once.. Been doing so much low-poly lately..
It's still rather low-poly, just fine-tuning it before I start subdiv modeling it. This is why I'm just showing you the wireframe instead of a nice beatyshot.
Got any suggestions on the model? The shape? The topography?
Thanks!
Wiktor

A bit hard to see the shape on the top of the front, but it seems you have a couple of loops there not really doing anything, same on the side of the front. Might just be me being hung over from the midsummer celebrations yesterday.
Some of the loops that might look unnecessary are in fact used for adding some lines between the metal plates that will be more visible in the high poly.. I don't really know how to explain it, but you'll see tomorrow or so when I put a high poly render up here.
Still a lot to do, but I figured I might show you what I've got so far.
PS:For some inspiration check out the Official home site of "Wipeout HD", the upcoming game.
Here's a small update. This project is going a bit slower than my projects usually do, due to my summer job.
Haha, I'm as anxious as you are to see the paint starting to come on!
I just wanna finish up the engine and the mechanical parts underneath it and add some more plating to the hull before I start texturing.
Thanks for the comment!
Starting working on the engine part today and I'm more or less done with the hull.
Expecting to have a basic texture by next weekend.
That's the worst part with working with 3d graphics.. It's so hard to get the motivation to work on personal projects on your spare time. >.<
Anyways, enjoy, and please comment!
Might suggest adding some things that make it feel more personal. Items that would be useful on the underside of the ship, like repair tools and such.
Notice how in this picture the tank has all that extra gear stuffed in the back.
Keep up the good work
About the repair kits and stuff.. I can't see how it would fit into the WipeOut theme to be honest, and my goal is to come as close to a high res wipeout ship as possible.
Vahl, yeah, I've been wondering about the Quake attack as well! xD The asphalt should get kinda destroyed as well IRL, don't you think? ^^
Hoping to get an update here tonight!
My hopes were true, and I finally UV-mapped the hull and started texturing it!
It's faaar, faaar from done, but it'll hopefully give you a glimpse of what it'll look like later on.
Here it is!
don't forget some scorch marks out the back from near where the jets would be putting some heat onto the hull
Started working on the engine section textures today as well as refining the hull's texture.
I also reversed the colour scheme on the other side of the ship, so that the two sides look different from eachother.
Currently baking some ambient occlusion for some other engine parts, so this WIP will have to do.
Feel free to C&C! It'd be greatly appreciated!
Aye, that will come, don't worry about that!
Thanks for the comment!
I'd love to make one of these one of this days.
Thanks!
Yeah, Wipeout is one of the best racing games out there if you ask me. Have you checked out WipeOut HD? Man.. It makes me drool!
Hey c0ldhands! Nice to hear from you again! Hope you're enjoying your vacation! can't wait to have 4 weeks vacation before uni starts again.. Work is tough this close to deadline.. Hence the long time it takes for me to finish this ship up.
Glad to hear you like it man! See you in august!
Thanks man! I'm gonna finish up on the engine tonight and then keep working on the paintjob. I'm gonna create a nice carpaint/metall-ish shader as well.
I hope you'll like it once I'm done with it! ^_^
Thanks a lot!
Alright.. Not much of an update today. I got home and felt really tired and not in the mood for working, so I've just worked on the specular map and added some normal map details. I'm hoping to get some more details on the hull in tomorrow, such as panels, bolts and seams.
Anyways, enjoy!
Added some more details to the normal map along with some improved specular maps.
Enjoy!
This is looking great though, so keep up the awesome work
Thanks a lot, Jason!
About the specular: Yes, it requires a lot more work. The one I have now more or less only affects the metal beneath the scratched-off paint. I did this because I wanted to see how it would bring forth the normal mapped details. However, I am having some problems making the material look realistic. I don't have much experience working with Mental Ray shaders, so if you have any ideas about that, or how to do it in any other way, please, let me know. Right now I'm just using a basic Blinn shader with a diffuse, specular and normal map.
Thanks again!
Here we go!
Thanks a lot!
Yeah, a friend of mine suggested that as well, so I'm seriously considering it.
Thank you very much!
Glad to see you guys like it!
What's the final triangle count?
The high poly ended up at around 400.000 tris and the lowpoly ended up somewhere between 9 and 10.000. Can't remember the exact amount.
Hahaha, thanks a lot man! Yeah, I was actually thinking about doing a new render with a new colour scheme and refined texture.
Thanks a lot for your comments guys!
Cheers man! I'm really happy so many actually liked the pink! I thought a lot of people would diss it straight away.
About the dirt.. Aye, you're absolutely right there. I should rework the dirt pass and re-render it. Been meaning to do a new render for quite some time now, but I haven't been around my working station very much during the summer.
