Thanks Eric and thanks earthquake, you guys have been a tremendous help. Im sure there will other questions, but to be honest I am just glad I have gotten this far
For some reason my hood won't render, if I select the object and disable the projection and the unwrap modifier, the object is black, I thought at first it might be that the normals were flipped, but I flipped them and that didn't work. any ideas of why this happening
Looks like the Standard is not the root material. Go up in the material tree (up arrow icon above the "Standard" button), and check the settings there, probably a Shell material.
I would just recreate the material from scratch, I never use the Bake to Shell Material (or whatever that option's called in RTT).
What does your modifier stack look like? (I bet it's in sub-object mode, and not collapsed) And what does the Object Properties window look like? (I wonder if see-through is turned on)
First, don't use the Automatic UVs in the RTT dialog. Makes bad UVs for a game asset, or for any asset whose texture you want to edit later. You'll need to create a good UV yourself before baking, but that's really easy these days. And you'll need to re-bake, using that UV.
Second, collapse the stack, see if that fixes it. You have Show End Result turned off in your screenshot, this could cause your display/render problem since it will only render to that level in the modifier stack and not higher. Could also be the Shade Selected Faces toggle in the Viewport Configuration settings.
