RIP: Stan Winston

A bit premature perhaps in the absence of more mainstream confirmation but...

Aint it cool news is reporting that Special Effects Legend Stan Winston passed away last night. The genius behind much of the special effects in many films, including but not limited to:

Aliens
Iron Man
Galaxy Quest
The Terminator films
The Jurassic Park films
Monster Squad
Predator 1 & 2
AI
The Thing
Edward Scissorhands
...And many more

This is a sad day for the Entertainment industry as we've lost one of our icons. I know that his work personally inspired me to pursue entertainment art as a career.

Stan's work has always been an inspiration to me. It's hard to see the loss of such an incredible creative force. He'll truly be missed.

That sucks. I may have ended up in games, but my original intent was to do special effects for movies, and Stan was one of the major influences on that.

I watched a exhibition on Ray Harryhausen in Berlin this spring, who seemed like a grandfater to all this and is still alive, but Winston seemed like much younger.

Saw him at E3 a few years back and shook his hand, he literally looked as fit as a flea then - built like a tank... and by all accounts was a great guy too, real family man and loved his work.

As usual the big 'C' doesn't discriminate in who it affects.

BTW I recommend the StanWinston 'art of' and history of the Winston studio book, really superb read and chock full of great production photos of the model shop and creatures etc.

I am pretty stunned at this considering how fit he obviously was- but then again imagine the chemicals he would have been exposed to over the last thirty years of effects development.

Well, with Jim Henson and Stan gone, thats my two idols out. I am going of for a long drink.

An absolute legend in the special effects industry. Stan was the go-to man for all sorts of great visual trickery. The MacGuyver of plastic suits, blue screens, and animatronics. He was responsible for the creature effects in some of my favorite films. Although you have left us, Stan, know that your legacy lives on.

This is terrible, I loved this guy...he's the guy who brought us the predator along with countless other special effects characters. RIP!!
