The screen-shots look amazing, I really dig the "cel shaded/hand drawn" style they're using. Hopefully the rest of the game will match up to the standards of the art I've seen so far. Apparently it's scheduled for release during the last quarter of this year

I liked the anime, good to see the game doesn't look crappy. The graphics look nice but that isn't cel-shading.
I've been seeing this a lot, people calling Prince of Persia, Afro Samurai and Street fighter IV Cel-shaded, even game journalists and media do it. Cel-shading is a specific technique not a name to give to any non-photorealistic or illustrative rendering in a game.

This is an anime character, DerDude, and it is believable within its own context.

Could be worse, though. Imagine if someone ever came up with, say, ninjas that were also turtles. Mutated ones, to boot. That would never work, it's just too unbelivable.

lol I've been thinking the same thing for a while now.

Oh but this game looks really nice. I remember watching Afro Samurai just for the art, the show itself didnt interest me in the slightest, and this game so far looks as good as the show, to me.

This is looking really nice, and I hope it'll be as fun to play as it is to look at. And I agree, I'd like people to understand what cel-shading is, and use the term correctly. Hey, at least I haven't seen them spell it CelL-shading in a while, so that's good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but surely the whole 'black outline around the character' thing is the only thing that most people understand the term 'cel-shading' to mean. If the majority say thats what that effect is called, surely thats what the language means? *I* know it doesn't (technically) and so does everyone here, but really all it means is 'graphics that look like a cartoon', and this does, just a very well made cartoon.

erm, pretty sure its not just the black outline but also grouping the shading of an object into flat colour bands. I agree the definition is probably fairly loose, but not that loose.

I don't really subscribe to the 'popular misunderstanding=new definition' mindset, but sure, that's how it often works. Nevertheless, that's only after a lot of time has passed and there's nobody around from when the original meaning was widely used. Now it's just a case of people who don't know what they're talking about using a word they don't know the meaning of. Since the 'cel' comes from classic 2d animation, where they'd paint on acetate, the way I see it is that it refers mostly to the simplified colour-banding.

Also, anyone who disagrees is loose. Like a harlot.
At least, that's the popular opinion.

If you insist upon using the term, you could at least spell it right: ‘Cel-shading’, not ‘cell-shading’ – as in an animation cel. Oh, you don’t know what that is. But you’re writing about the style of it anyway. Of course.
