Congratz Polycounters!!
I am amazed at both the quality and quantity of work achieved for this competition. Looking at the finalist entries strapped my jaw to the floor.
......wow.
Congrats guys! This was a tough contest... There was some stellar work that didn't even hit the top 50 this time. Agreed with Brett though ...my inspiration folder is better for it:D
Congrats to everyone, especially SquirrelyJones for reppin' Polycount in the top ten!
I was definitely floored looking through the top entries. Just seeing what some of the entrants were able to create within the restrictions (especially the timewise) was very inspirational.
Looking back on the comp now and knowing where I went wrong, I have a lot of areas to focus on in the future for self-improvement.
My reference/inspiration folder is going to be a lot bigger once I get home tonight
Some incredible work has been done for this contest by people all over the world. Very impressive.
Personally I thought Katzeimsack's piece should have ranked in the top 20, IMHO it's stronger in most ways than some stuff in the top 5, but I guess in the end it's down to the taste of the judges, so it must be pretty difficult to get in there...
One thing I thought was pretty tough in this contest was the mix of "western" and "asian" game art styles... they are very distinctive and there isn't much crossover, it's very easy to tell which entries are from China/Korea/Japan etc. without even looking at the names, I wonder how that influenced the judging, because clearly personal taste for either "western" or "asian" style game art is going to weigh heavily in the outcome.
Oh well. Fantastic work from everyone, and well done to Fred and all the guys helping this contest to get it all wrapped up and presented in such a good way.

I'm right with you on this. Tonnes of great entires, judging must've been hellish for this. There are so many entries at such high quality levels and of such varied styles that every decision must've been a very close call.
But even so I was surprised by some things like Katz missing. And I still think that Rollin's is the best in the contest, but yea, like you said, it all comes down to taste.
Anyways, congrats to everyone. My inspiration folder definitely just got a boost as well.
yeah ranking is crazy on some entries... i wonder if they only took the winning pose for judging? because some texture work wasn't that good - even if the sculpt rocked hard...
Judging was way better this year. Congrats to all the polycounters that placed , especially Rollin, S Jones, Sparkey and Mr Gritton.
I thought bulgarov would take out first, that thing was rediculous. But I guess the materials were quite ambiguous. #1 in concept art kinda looks like he spilled his coffee on his final image, but the design is awesum .
really really impressive, Ive only looked at half the winners Im saving the rest to munch on at work when I get a free minute to browse
I know what I need to do to improve, I need some kind of topology workflow thats FAST and easy. At the moment I did everything manually and it just wasted so much time. Gonna look into silo and topogun, dont really like zbrushs solutions.
Execution over creativity as usual on the 3d side. =/
Ah well, one can't argue with the quality of any of the entries in the top 20. Absolutely stunning stuff from beginning to end. I would love to see the rules tweaked a little next year to encourage people to move towards more interesting, original designs. Something as simple as giving the judges getting the judges to score both aspects seperately should do the trick.
Congratulations to the guys who made it all the way. It was one hell of a competition.
Yeah, congrats to the winners, some awesome work this year.
A bit some of my favs weren't even in the top50, for example I was really expecting DemonPrincess to be in there, her piece was simple but so refreshing.
Funny to see how the Koreans dominated the 2D top spots, damn those asians and their mad art skills.
I'm not overly familiar with the other communities that enter this but polycounters seem to be the only ones that do the whole 'community spirit' thing in the sense of identifying with a particular forum overtly by using a mascot, the green guy. I hope that that 'humour' wasn't disadvantaged in any way because I thought that was an interesting 'test' to see how peeps implemented that 'symbol'.
Aside from that there's some astonishing work on show as always.

They make a lot of games over there, a lot. :P
Yes maybe we will see some fat chicks next year?
