Environment WIP: It came from the sky...

Havent have any big response so i felt this piece was lacking something. Drama and mood, so i put some elements in to liven up the scene. Be fore warned this piece is far from finished and im still working on it. Here's what i have so far though. Please comment the more comments the better.

I like the first one i just think it needs a bit more ambient light.

the image doesn't make that cube thing feel like the focus.

perhaps some beams of light through the cracks? and a larger one through that hole....cast some nice rim lights on the objects mainly the cube and bring it into focus

I like the concept but yeah maybe a stronger light coming from outside shining on it? or perhaps the object itself giving off a glow or shooting light out of it's crevices would be pretty cool.

Here's another update. I put more light and smoking fog under the box. Also the items around the box have been desaturated a bit so there colors wouldnt distract for the focus of the box. Granted i havent put more debris around the box for the ceiling hole im working on that. I just need to get a good grasp of the lighting first.

I think you need some proper solid beams of light rather than just a vague haze.

where from the top? I didnt want the light from the top that strong because its a dawn eniviroment. Should ihave stronger shadows coming the light in the center?

its better with the stronger shadows but the volume light coming from the cieling hole looks like sand is being poured into the hole. I think much less noise and more beam of light effect would be cool, like in the paintover.

I think you may have to rethink your lighting if this is meant to be dawn, light wouldnt really even come down to this room through the hole in the cieling at dawn, it certainly wouldnt come down vertically like you have it now unless it was from a street light or something in which case it would be more of a white light.

But, depending on how long ago the object fell, the dirt it would have thrown about may not have settled yet, so the haze make some sense.

Interesting piece.. I really like what you're trying to do with it. I would suggest though, as I think others have, picking a new composition. Centering the camera on the entire scene like this doesn't really get the eye moving.

You may want to increase the FOV of the lense (33mm is a good sweet spot for a camera lense) and do a low show, thats looking up at the crate and through the roof. Or, you could do a long shot, with the object off in the background and something in the foreground that has left this box, and is exploring the barn/shed/structure it crashed in to.

Do you have an actual back story for this? I'd love to read it...

Thanks Adam i will try that. A new compostion ill try too, the reason i hesitiate is because that barn room is all thats there nothing else, im going have build more room then. Also i want to show as much of the props as possible too. So im kinda stuck.

Here's another pic with a color blue rather than the dawn color. I want to give a more alien feel to this. the camera FOV is 33mm and lowered more looking up toward the roof which is a very good extreme view. Im going to add tentancles coming under from the box also to make the scene more interesting. I like the bottom view better

Actually the story to this piece is based off the thing, since that movie scared the living daylights outta me as a kid. I still have nightmares about that film.

The problem I have with the blue light thing is that it doesn't look like "ray of lights" so to say.

It may be sand/fog whatever but then there'd be less of it towards the opening. Right now I can't make anything out of the blue stuff coming into the hole. What is it? Looks like someone covered the sky with a 32x32 blue sky texture or something.

Other than that it looks pretty cool.

Acutally the blue light is coming from the UFO that dropped the box in the barn as it takes off.

thanks Frozan BTW your porfolio stuff is awesome. I like modular building youre working on in your blog. Im experimenting with modular buildings myself. Do you have any advise or good detailed tutorials on modular building?
