hello everyone. I have not posted here in quite sometime.
I just finished this personal project and wanted to share. My goal was to make the 3d environment look as much like a painting as possible. I also wanted to make sure I could do this with just my texures and not have to do any painting over the final renders. On a couple of the rendered shots, I did a color correction in Lightroom to get the greenish effect. Other than that, they are untouched.
to see all the renders, textures and wire :

Would like to see how this looks in an engine.
Only place that you can tell looks somewhat 3-d is the area where the bridge and grass meet
Holds up really well with different lighting setups too.
Very nice.

The problem would be finding enough artists who can work in this style to actually put together enough assets to make a game =/
Really nice. Would love to see more work like this for sure.
badass.
I also thought it was just a painting first glance...
bounchfx - word!
AsylumSeaker - yeah, good eye, I didnt notice. i should have beefed up that area more with grass. or spent more time on that road..its pretty angular..and i am not sure it fits well to be honest.
Lee3dee - the night shots are just 5 or 6 omni lights in max. with a final gather render. the daylight shot is just one skylight, with lightracer turned on. i dont really know much about rendering. since in games i just light everything inside the engine. but with me pestering sinistergfx alot on how to turn light tracer on, i got some decent shots. i also had to ask him to get alpha working. i had been using maya the past 2 years so i kind of forgot everything in max.
adamBrome - i have had that question from a few of my friends, why not make normal and spec and ao maps to kick this thing up a notch. and i might. i guess i just wanted to see how far i could get with just diffuse. its fun to just go back to the basics. if i do, i will post the results. for me though i think it might look less like a painting. but who knows?
renderhjs - thanks dude.
Swizzle - me too!
SuPa- i agree. will fix that. thanks
Ged - exactly!
coward ,Sage, sprunghunt, nkoste, timwiese - glad you liked it!
Dekard , Kevin Johnstone - haha!
Vig - thank you ....sadly it isn't in most artists best interest to learn a style, in this market its best to learn how to make the most photo real looking brick, concrete, steel etc., environments. who knows, maybe the winds will change!
tinman - thanks Jordan
JesseMoody - thanks! me too! will try for sure to get something new going soon
BrodyB - ha, glad you liked it
moose - i'm glad.
pliang - would be fun to throw this in an engine i agree. thanks!
I'm not sure about adding normalmaps though, I think you may get better results just with what you have given the subtle lighting your scene has, normals and spec may show off the 3d look a bit too much, not sure, though.
So what did you use to paint your textures photoshop, painter?
the textures were painted in photoshop with my drawing tablet and a homemade brush preset. the rest was done in max.
Any chance of seeing more artwork in a similar style?
