The secret to making the cut tool behave -all- of the time in perspective view:
Turn on 3d snapping with face snapping enabled. If you turn off the marker display, it's a bit less annoying to work with.
Cut tool works fine for me in 3dsmax 2008, all the time. I only had problems with it not snapping right in 3dsmax 9 and earlier. It used to create dodgy duplicate verts now and then when it should have been snapping, but it seems like they've fixed that in 2008.
Are you on 2008 now, sinistergfx, and if so, is it the same "not quite precise" issue that used to plague the cut tool in Perspective view? Or is it a different issue you're referring to?
I use IC and it's great, but the draw tool really isn't a replacement for the cut tool in all situations; like drawing cuts where there aren't edges to draw over.
EDIT: Mop: Using Max9 at work. I haven't done a whole lot of modelling on 2008 at home. Yeah, this is a fix for the perspective issue. "Not quite precise" is an understatement in some cases . Just thought it would be a helpful tip.
I remember reading that the scale you work at could effect the level of precision. I've never tested it out because its always worked like I need it to.
Cool trick sinistergfx. I get the problem in Max 9 sometimes, clicking in the middle of a face. It's funny, 2009 is just sitting there on my desk, untouched, need to get it going (when I'm not hella busy).
But I found it easy and comfortable to use the cut tool in "3Dsmax 9"
I could draw the vertices in on the selected faces and could get the outline of an image i've applied on face.
Unlike the cut tool in "3Dsmax2009", where the cut tool and quickslice tool work almost the same,
I cant see any difference in the two"
That was useful when i start modeling from an image on a plane"

So that was something i was looking.
