I might be living in the US for about 6 months if I can sort out an internship. I'm awful with currency and also a direct exchange won't necessarily give me accurate info. From your experience how cheaply can you live week to week in the US?
I'm talking student lifestyle, whether it be baked beans as a staple food and living a bedsit with a combined bed/toilet/cooker.

Seconded for the DC area
If you've got a place lined up to intern at, try asking HR if anyone at the company needs a roomate. I occasionaly see "new hire needs roomate" emails sent out by HR people on our community email list.
I'm moving from Reno to Seattle, and it's about a 8% increase in overall cost of living. Housing is a lot more expensive, costing $300-400 more on average, for an equal sized or smaller apartment. Utilities are also a bit more expensive.
Use population as a guideline, but not a steadfast rule.
