Nice 2d painting app?

GIMP is really doing my head in...


I figure the are some clued up individuals here who have a taste for pixel mashing? All I'm after is some recommendations for simple, efficient 2d painting apps (prefer free/OS :nerd:) I'm thinking a modern deluxe paint? My google searches have turned up some dead ends and a strange browser based app that wouldn't load new images :whyme: App database wasn't much better. Most apps come close but always seem to come to pieces because of something obvious and time consuming.

paint.net sucks for painting, the brushes haven't got pressure sensitivity of any kind, unless I'm missing simethung. but it does make up for the lack of post processing the other apps don't have.
