Hi folks. I'm a student right now and I thought I'd post up a couple of early renders of some of my portfolio characters.
Here are some preliminary renders I set up just to show them off to some people. The merchant doesn't have anything but a colour texture so far, and some more work will be put into the details of his texture. The Pachydermic Jellyfish is closer to completion but still needs some tweaks. The final scene will also have a bunch of worker characters doing their various jobs on the jellyphant's palanquin.
Any comments and critiques would be much appreciated. If you want views of different angles just let me know.

What I'd say you should address before you proceed any further is your poly distribution. You have some very small areas, like the fingers of the merchant, that have very dense edgeloops, while large forms, such as his belly and chest, lack in definition and appear too angular and blocky. I'd add some more loops in that area, and also on tentacles of the elephant, while reducing the poly count on the tentacle tips, which are relatively small and could be defined with less polygons. Also, I would suggest fixing the edgeloops on the merchant's face, since at the moment it doesn't seem like it will deform too well when rigged and animated. Good luck and keep us posted.
I'm no character person so all I reckon is presentation wise, perhaps some (even faked) DOF on the environments. Hope you dont mind me saying, but the quality and detail is below that of the characters, so maybe have them blurred out a bit or something for a quick fix.
Also, I'm not sure about the merchant, but everything else, just diffuse? Find myself wanting to see some normal/spec maps on that jellyphant
