Extreme computer problem. Please help!

ok, i have a problem with my computer.

When I was doing an Avast Virus scan, i wanted to check something on Oblivion really fast. Thinking my computer could handle it, i tried. My computer froze, and after about 5 mins, i cold booted it. Windows went through the whole improper shutdown and repair crap, then it continued to load. Once i logged in, i noticed nothing came up like usual. I tried to start a random game, and it didn't work. So i tried almost all my exe things i downloaded. Every time it says "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem" Well...i have a lot of stuff on my computer, and this will take awhile to do...a long while. I might as well reformat my damn harddrive! But that would be stupid. Is there a registry problem or something that would cause all the exe applications that isn't originally installed with windows not to work?

Help will be appreciated.

    well as you have learned
A: do not ever ever modify the data on your hd while doing a virus scan. if you must. Pause the scan first, then do what ever you need to do.

it certainly sounds like a registry issue. You could try a registry cleanup program or you could try to load windows to a previously set system restore point. Sometimes an antivirus will set those before scanning in case f something like this, but windows should do it when it installs updates too.

Is there a free registry fix program? I have looked, and the ones i have seen, only offer to scan for free, then you have to buy to fix.

And also, that computer doesn't have access to the internet. When i got my wireless card, it came with a program to do it, and it is better then the stupid windows crap, and since no exe files work, it won't open, and windows still sees itself as blocked from doing so....

I have work in an hour....on my computer...so this doesn't look good...

Oh and i have windows xp pro 64bit, trying to find a registry scanner for that...

Snapfiles/freeware I've always had positive results with well rated software from snapfiles. don't really specifically remember any registry programs of the top of my head though. I reformat my computer at least every other month because it's quicker than cleaning it and with only 180 gigs that's about how long it takes to fill up lol.... unless i go into a torrent frenzy then it's just a few days :p

    Does that work with 64bit?

EDIT: ...welp...it won't let me run the exe for the installation of the repair!!! This is starting to piss me off!!!

Ok...well...my DVD drive says the same damn thing! That means i am going to have to repair this, or atleast fix that problem, in order to reinstall windows.

Or, i can start DOS and reformat my hard drive right? How exactly am i to do this?

Hold on... are you running XP? If so, you can usually repair the install. Boot from your XP CD, then tell it you want to install XP. It will detect you currently have a version, and you tell it to fix it. Don't choose the repair option earlier in the install process. It only takes you to the DOS prompt so you can make changes. A TRUE repair should exist further in the install process.

Hope that makes sense. It's easier to explain in real life ;)

Thanks....I will have to try that when i get home. I was thinking of doing so, but didn't know if it will work. Most likely will. Well...now i kinda want to reformat my hard drive. It will take awhile to get all my steam games back on there (i have over 10 i think), but i can backup my data with this 500GB external harddrive. But still don't know if i want to do that or not...

I just got a registry repair file (the actual registry file, whatever the extension is on that) thingy from this one guy. Haven't tried it yet, but hoping it fixes my problems. Will try it when i get home. (If it fixes all my problems i will be surpirsed, this isn't the first time my registry got fucked)

Awhile ago, i decided to download SonicStage for my Sony mp3 player. Well, that turned out bad (since i have xp 64bit, not the same registry as it thought it was, so it screwed it up)(not this bad) but bad. It made my Autoplay brake (which it still is, comes up blank, but nothing too bad, too lazy to fix) And also made my DVD ROM disapear. Had to call the people, and they told me how to change my registry so i could fix it. I did, and that was all good.

But after this, once i get the exe's working (if the windows repair doesn't work) I am going to use that registry repair thing to fix all the rest of my problems.

Just do a repair install. If you run someone elses registry file, its just going to screw up your computer.

Do a repair install and read a book or something.

Last time i had a problem (XP rebooted over and over) i booted in safe mode and used restore point. Might be worth a shot. Hopefully it will restore an error free registry, just pick a date that was stable.

My failsafe is an image file of the windows partition, which means a clean install with all 3d apps ready to use in 5 minutes, or restoring damaged files.

might consider looking for a free registry backup program, even if you reformat :poly004::smokin:

I think i am just going to reformat. For a few reasons.

    1. I have some games that i deleted when i changed my steam account (From my friends account to mine) and there are still those little data fragments that i can't get rid of in the Add/Remove Programs. OCD is going crazy

    2. I have spent all day backing up my data just incase, and now, it the repair thingy's won't work, and i am getting pissed.

    3. It's easy!

    4. Will take care of data a lot better this time around, then i did in the last round.

Now i am having a damn product key problem! I got this from my teacher, who can get the OS for students, and the product key she gave me is invalid! She doesn't know the problem, and i don't either. Is there a way to get my product key on the disks files?

If this doesn't work, then i will have to somehow get into my friends dads room, then get the XP 64bit i had in the first place (which he thought i was just testing). But this would be harder to get the disk, cause he NEVER EVER leaves his room. A lazy bastard he is.

Sounds like you're screwed. If you've formated the drive, then it's gone. This is one of those reasons I say to repair instead of reformat ;)

I have all my data, that is all fine. It's just a pain in the ass when the CD keys they gave my teacher don't work...

call Microsoft, explain the situation and they'll give you a new key - and yes it really works, I done it before :)

So you are having trouble repairing the Windows install that you lied to your friend's "lazy bastard" dad in order to get? That's a real bummer. Too bad there isn't a Service Pack for shitty karma.
  • Wej
Actually, no i am not using the one I lied to get in the first place, that was the one I was using before it broke. That is the one we will have to sneak into his room to get if i can't get this one working =P.

EDIT: My teacher called Microsoft, and they said the other ones should work, if I am doing it right. I know i am, as i have done it before, but i am still confused. They said there is about a 1% chance that one of those is broken...well...my luck is that bad... hopefully one of the other two she gave me will work.

At any rate, at least this time, i can download the Language thing from the disk, so I can finally see Japanese writing instead of ???????????????????????????????????????????????
