resources about texture limitations for games

hi there


i´m serching for some kind of info about the limitations of game-textures.. why do they have to be the power of 2 pixelwise (or why and when not)? and how the memory management is handelt (big Textures need big Vid-card-memory)

And it doesn´t help me if your telling me why.. :p i need some kind of scientific resorce.. maybe a book or a webpage from people who are developing such stuff (e.g. programmer)

(nothing about normalmapping and such stuff.. only about diffuse and its format and size)

It does not have to go very deep into the theory.. i´m more in the need of some scientific backup for my statements
