Someone made a master chief model for unreal tournament 3 on the PS3, and surprisingly, microsoft is totally cool with this. It looks like a good model too.
This kinda makes me think... First of all, its great that MS allow stuff like this to go on, as in, if somebody madea halo 3 map/model and stuck it in UT3, then of course MS should allow them. Its free publicity after all...
But...
Thats the Halo 3 model, as in, ripped from game files. That shouldn't be allowed...?
"The developers aren't selling the mod, they're not monetizing Microsoft's IP, they're just creating something to share their love of the Master Chief on a new platform. It's a great thing for us and a great thing for the gaming community."
That's actually really cool and smart of them. I wish other companies, like Marvel *shakes fist*, had that same perspective.
And at the same time, I agree, it does question whether ripped game files should be allowed.
Apparently the mod that allows these characters to be used is being credited to the wrong person in articles all across the internet. He's simply the guy that ported it to the PS3 without permission.
There would definitely be quite a bit of 'tweaking' required to get the model to work in UE3 - it's not like you can just 'rip' the character out of Halo3 and plonk him into UT3. I don't see any problem with it personally, I think it's awesome. Spread the love.
Hehe Monkeyboy, actually it is. Since this character is mostly armored I'd say it'd take like an hour or so to port it roughly. Now if we are talking about proper UV placement per bodypart thats another story since you need to rebake the UVs using projection techniques. But still, this is quite easy. And I personnaly do see problems with ripping models from a commercial game. It's just so much more fun to create one from scratch, and is more respectful for the art team behind the ripped assets...
Does anyone else see the irony in the EE camp getting peeved about someone else taking credit for his models? Looking at EEs boards and the way these models have been released, he doesn't appear to be giving credit to the people who worked hard to create these in the first place.

If this is true, all time low for the UT mod community. This is why we can't have nice things.
