max2008 RTT normal map render using mental ray

mental ray does not anti-alias the resulting normal map no matter how high i set the sampling quality for mental ray. hmm, seems like a bug to me.

anyone else see this? and is there a workaround?

thanks,
Rom

Scanline? Kind of a pain in the ass if you're also baking MR-AO.
Maybe merge your file into a new scene?
    Xnormal?

I've never used MR for normal maps, I'll have to play around with it and see if I get any troubles.

For normal map generation I'd suggest xNormal as well. xNormal also does antialiasing on floating geometry, so the edges will blend well.

thanks guys for the input. this is for a colleague. scanline is crashing for him for some unknown reason and mR is more stable but it doesnt anti-alias the resulting normal map.

i did try xNormal on his scene but the results were too soft. i need to play with the settings some more and see how i can sharpen the details. do you guys know off-hand how to sharpen the details in xNormal?

    thanks,
