Well, quite frankly the helmet texture is really boring compared to the rest of the body. The whole body could probably do with some more contrast and color variations, but the helmet is the main offender.

thanks a lot
I thought of rusting the hell out of the helmet, but then I thought with the semi toon style and the mirroring on the texture it might look odd. What details would you recommend adding?
I have a scratched layer overlayed that I could beef up the opacity on to see if that helps a bit.
I like the character a lot, but I agree the helmet is throwing it off. I don't think it's a lack of detail, I think it's just the design.
As it stands now, it looks like it's got 4 eyes, with 2 black eyebrows, and I can't tell what the mouth guard thing is. I think the back view of it looks fine, but I expect that if I were to turn him around from that view, I would see something awesome on the front. As it is, it just leaves me confused.
I'd try redesigning the faceplate of the helmet. Otherwise I think he's awesome!
Oh, and he needs a big axe, or spear or something that's about 3 times taller than he is.
The mouthguard/snout thing is just very bland and hard to see what its supposed to do.
He'd make a very good metal pig head. I think it would look better with large eye holes, small glowing centers perhaps, and if you put a pair of holes on the mouthguard thing it would make a great pig snout, which is fun and comical all at once.
Thanks a lot for your comments guys it's good to have a fresh set of eyes looking at it.
@Tumerboy
Good point in that it's hard to tell what things are.
Those black things are meant to be eyebrows and the faceplate was meant to be something like a mechanical lower jaw. I totally agree with you in that it doesn't read well - hell even I don't know how many eyes he has!
I'll add an axe or blade/spear pole type thing soon
I think the change to the eyes gives him the personality he was originally meant to have. I'm pretty happy with him now, just gotta tweak the texture a little.
what do you all think?
@monochrome, I'm mainly doing this as a portfolio/practice thing, but sure if you want and I'm properly accredited and that kinda jazz. gotta link or something?
El ZOrR, we dont have a website yet, but you can take a look at your announcement post on the requests forum (http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=276176&an=0&page=0#Post276176) and register on our forums if you wish.
And of course, we'll credit you for your work and include the original model readme, if you're kind enough to provide it aswell.
For a small suggestion, i think the mouthguard should be darker than the rest of the helmet, like on the original concept, and the "teeth" should be smaller. I think you should also create the skin variants sugested by tumerboy. some of those are really good.
I don't know why you feel so tied to the jaw thing, I think it really detracts from the piece. I think you could make the helmet bump out in front a different way, use less polys, and have it look far better, If you really want something to stick out. But I think the character is simple enough that having a flat front on his helmet wouldn't be that big of a deal, and would save you some polys.
I dont really feel tied to the jaw thing, I just thought it made it more interesting.
anyway I deleted it which takes it down to 728 tris, then I gave him a bounty hunter looking helmet face. I have some free texture space now I could put some other sort of aplha-ed hair or something like that maybe?

edit: update!
Am I on the right track here?

@Vailis
good idea
(tumerboy's paintovers)
I did a quick texture change to see how he looks:

750 tris all up, 256 texture. I think he's looking finished. Any comments?
Spear Head reference
Other than that it looks great!
