I'm in the Marines and when I was in Iraq I noticed that the soldiers, when kneeling weren't really supporting themselves as a firing position. The position was similar to our "high kneel" but they were all even higher than that. Much like the little green army men when they are kneeling. When we are in the kneeling we more or less sit on our foot.

Is this just a position taught in the Army? I am just curious to find an answer.

    you mean like this?

If so then that's just a natural position to kneel in when you might need to get up and run. You're both kneeling and ready to jump up and go. Least that's the way I see it. Used it loads of time in elementary school when playing games or in PE.

yeah something like that, a kneel like that doesn't provide any support for firing a rifle. And it's not much more work to get up and run with any of the kneeling stances. It just doesn't look right like that, heh.
