Hey everyone, it's been a while (like a year..) since I've done any character modeling. I work as an architectural 3d modeler but it's SO BORING. So here's this incubus I've been working on. I'd REALLY like some critiques on it. Thanks very much!
With some reference you should quickly see if the anatomy is off. If you use the head as the proportion reference, the general width of a figure is 2 1/3 heads. Gets smaller at the waist. I think you should bring the sides of the mesh to define the lateral muscles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Latissimus_dorsi.png
Sorry for the butt shot.. here's more work on my incubus, this time with back muscles!
Spines looking a little gooey, but I think I'll fix that when I go back and add more muscles to the whole thing. Here's his front, looking not so anorexic anymore.
Maybe the tail would look a little better if it followed the spines curve downward a little bit then went out in the desired direction. But that's just how I would have done it Keep us updated !
Looking very nice actually, though isn't an incubus a male sexual predator? What you're modeling looks more like a Satyr to me.
Also, the tail is most definitely in the wrong spot. Tails typically come directly off the butt (IE vertically) and then curve out since they're an extension of the spinal cord. This image is a little too big, but its good reference for showing how the tail follows the curve of the spine.
Yes, he's a sexual male predator. I was kinda going for less of the "I'm a sexy dude here to whisk you away" and more of a "I'm a sexy dude here to beat you into submission and then whisk you away."
Thank you for the tail reference, I'll be working on that next!
Lowered the tail again, and added his head and hands. He's getting to be a handsome boy. Anyone think his head is too small? Or is it just all the muscle messing with my eyes?
The perspective gives the impression that the camera is low and angled up, which does make his head look smaller. If the camera isn't like that, then I'd say his head needs to be bigger. The general rule of thumb is that your face is as long as your hand.
Don't mind proportions being off, as it is a mythical creature, but I think the hooves stand out to me. I think define them more clearly, and look at some hoof reference.
So I'm thinking of doing hair next, but the Max hair modifier is like.. insanely laggy. What would you guys suggest? Or should I texture him first? Or should I clothe him?
Actually he really looks like his entire body is tapering towards the top now. I'd say scale his head up 115% at least and maybe make his arms a bit bulkier to counter balance the tapered look. Otherwise he's going to end up looking like a pyramid.
And you're gonna hate me, but from that back shot, his tail still looks too high though I can't tell for sure. Crack of the ass :P
Definitely showing some real progress now. When do you plan to start adding his straps and 'other' equipment?
Did a quick paint over:
His torso was missing a lot of the normal s-curve that follows up the spine. This backiotomy should give him a more pleasing appearance from where his tail meets the caboose. Also tilted his ribcage which also gives his pecs a more normal appearance, as well (unless he's the kind of demon who got breast enlargements down in South Beach). I kept the profile fairly slender, but you can beef him up as you see fit.
The only other thing that stuck out at me was the massiveness in his thighs. It's possibly just the result of adjusting the rest of his torso, but maybe see about at least smoothing out the plane coming from the top of the leg down to the knee. Then again, you could always fudge this in favor of having to support him differently, because of the equine legs.

I actually feel like his torso is too long and thin.. anyone have any ideas?

More stuff.. back muscles, tail lowered, thinking of working on the stomach but don't know if I should do the legs first.. blah.
The black is where you have it:
The tail should not come out of the small of the back.
Again, any help would be appreciated. I'm sure you guys will spot stuff I can't see. Like the chest. Somethings up but I can't find it.
Quick update, got his arms in thar..
He's turning out a lot more muscly than I expected.. XD

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see how it looks when its finished.

This would be best (grey is where you had the tail)
Basically a tail would come out right at the top of the crack of your butt.

Good work otherwise.
