I'm not 100% sure about the weapon, I think i'll change it, just thinking some ideas

i think it could use some features to distinguish different parts of the body however. Right now it kind of has an all over general texture. add something that might make parts stand out more, other than that i really like the style of the creature!

My idea its to do what you say, separate some parts of the model with that "green energy" now that I'm sure about the colors
I'm looking for something like the efect of burning magma trought rocks ..

Head zbrushed with standart brush, no p.master or minor details on it, 500.000 zbrush polys.

The way lava overlaps itself and that branching thing its doing (bottom left 2nd pic) could prove intriging.

I'm going to change the desing of the weapon, I dont like that one very much, I think that I'll mix the desing of that one with something "dark magical"

Update,
I tested the mesh with AO to see the losse of detail between zbrush and max (i have to improve it, it had lost to much detail ), also I quick added a provisional teeth and eyes just to see how it looks
