Some of the sketches seem to lack some form or detail and its hard to tell whats going on, however the little satyr guy at the bottom seems to stick out at me the most. He seems to have a mischievous twist to him that i like He reminds me of one of those little annoying fetish from Diablo II in the Kurast Docks...and that could really be played into his character. Great start, looking forward to seeing more!
Arix: I agree about the lack of form and detail, but they were more scribbles than anything really. Just to get the juices flowing.
As for the little imp type dude, I didn't even have that in mind when I started scribbling away and in the end, it turned into that, haha.
Thanks for stopping by and checking it out.
I've been doing some more doodles and scribbles, some a little more refined. I spent the entire weekend messing around in photoshop to no avail. But this morning after a quick session, I've finally decided on a design (which needs a whole lot more work and refinement).
Taking heavy influence from a paratrooper with the packs and satchels and blending it with a ninja with a twist of Mad Max. Primary weapon will be dual (artifact infused) swords, which he sheaths at the back. He'll have a whole bunch of artifact infused weapons (daggers, throwing knives, elemental bombs) strapped all over.
I also plan to either give him a mount or a pet. Currently going for Polar Bear proportions with a chunkier front section. Kind of a death hound.
Bio and description to follow and hopefully some more refinement on the silhouette and a start on the detailing.
Cool man, good to see you're progressing. Concepting can be a frustrating process. Getting a bio' in your head is a good idea. I find a solid back-story really helps flesh out the details of a design. Looking good so far, I'll be expecting updates thick and fast!
Speaking of which, I'd better light a fire under my ass when I get home tonight...
that photoshop silhouette for some weird reason reminds me of Yoshimitsu from Tekken 4, but the one i saw at work today has got a more paratrooper feel to it, either way i like em both
Thanks, Justin. Not progressing as fast as I would like, but some progress is better than no progress.
And yeah, light that fire and knock together some pro shit!
Thanks to you too, Lucais. I'll hassle you more at work
Here is a minor update to the silhouette, still needs more work, and I'm nowhere near happy with the swords at this stage. Not really liking the butterfly effect and I think they are a bit too chunky and too long at this stage.
Coming along nicely dude. If you find yourself struggling with armour design and the like, Android shows off a pretty cool technique to get some random designs in his thumbnail demo tut.. http://dvd.massiveblack.com/downloads.html
The left one is really nice. I'm not that convinced about the square looking head thou, maby making it slope down a little in the front, and lower the mouthguard?
Great to see ya in the running mate, i gotta get me some of that lovely brown paper to draw on aswell, instead of bloody jotter pads, it really gives the sketches a awesome feel
silhouette is looking awesome, looking forward to seeing the detail within.
one idea that came to mind, have you thought of putting his blades onto chains so he can totally hurl them at his opponent then yank them back into his hands for close quarters fighting?
gavku: Thanks, mate. I did have a quick look at the site, but haven't had too much to look into getting a hold of the vids. Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely have a look into getting a hold of that for future reference.
Belltann: As for the square head, that is just due to the rough sketching that never got refined. I do have a more refined version of the side profile, but most of the silhouette is going to change from the side version so I didn't bother posting it this time around. It was more of a guide for me to see where I'm going to place packs, daggers, details, etc.
Thanks for stopping by and checking it out.
Ged: Thanks a bunch, mate. Glad you like the silhouette, sorry there wasn't much more, but I'm hoping to rectify that
Massius: Thanks for link and the suggestion dude, but I guess I already explained to you at work why I will probably not go down this path.
It's been a good while since I've looked at this character. Been far too busy at work to even think about it lately. But lunch time today gave me a bit of free time to visit this guy and give him a bit more love.
Did this in about 20 odd mins of random doodling, had one other variation but it was looking turds so I started this second one. Just filling in the void and will refine it some more soon (i hope).
I even started a 3D sketch about 2 weeks ago which I never posted, but it was more for myself to check proportions, but as I start adding more packs and straps to the model I'll probably throw it up here and use it as my basemesh for sculpting.
I've been real slack the past few weeks, though I've been trying to nail the concept down even though I haven't really been posting. Plus I've been pretty tired after work, as we've had a bit going on, though it has been easing down a bit now.
Minor change in my idea (after a weird dream I had), my dude is now a hunter that uses an air artifact and is from a planet going through an Ice Age. Gave him an air artifact powered face mask, and his primary weapon will be an air rifle. Ditching the swords because he'll be too bulky to be able to use them effectively.
Didn't go to work today (feeling under the weather), so I slowly started sketching this guy out in 3D. I'm liking the direction so far, but still needs a whole lot more refinement in shape and detail. This will not be used for my final mesh, but may re-topo to use it as a base mesh for sculpting later.
Still keeping the pet idea, will give him either a polar bear or a wolf (slightly re-designed).
Not throwing in the towel yet, though I'm really running out of time to get a polished mesh finished.
Crits and paintovers are more than welcome, though this is far from finished.
Hey Casey this looks like a pretty good start, though he is feeling a little like Pyro from Team Fortress:) I guess it's hard not to have that feel if you throw a gasmask on something now a days:/ I would vote for a wolf instead of a bear, as it feels a little more vicioius to me, and there are alot of bears out there in the war so far. Good luck on this, and keep it up..were almost to the end of it.
wizo: Glad you like the design and the proportions and I promise more angles soon. I only showed the front view because the back looks like turds at the moment.
Spark: I feel you with the Pyro comment, I was actually thinking the same thing. I'll have to spend a bit of time designing the mask, I might make it a single mouth piece with separate goggles. That might solve it, I think it just may be the round eyes.
I'm re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire again, and just read a Jon chapter on the train ride in to work and his wolf just ravaged a bunch of dudes, so that pretty much sold me on sticking with the wolf.
Thanks for the crits, guys and hopefully should have some more updates after I get home from work.
Casey I think it's the silhouette that is giving the tf2 pyro feel. The baggy pants/shorts and tight boots push the pyro feel. If he were slimmed down the mask would be fine or get rid of the mask. Just my 2 cents
sif mess with an Albino Direwolf!
yeah totally agree with the wolf idea, while bears are massive and kinda cool, Wolfs are more intelligent and agile, which i think would suit your guy better, plus having also just re read the song of ice and fire books i am also in agreeance to go with the wolf idea
really liking the direction man, while i agree that he is kinda similar in the mask to tf2 pyro, its early stages of a 3d sketch and there is heaps u can do to pull him away from that comparison (the idea for the single mouth peice and separate goggles being a good start)
having no PC has caused me to all but bomb out of the comp, i get my new comp tommorow so hopefully i can jump back into it...but with time whittling down i dont like my chances of having a good entry
roo: Thanks, mate. I had a look at some of the TAD gear you mentioned and did give me a few ideas to kit my dude out. Thanks for that, mate.
IronHawk: Thanks for the tips, dude. I'll probably end up re-working the mask or getting rid of it because it is a tad generic and mainly because I'm liking the proportions of the guy for the moment (could be a bit chunkier) and would rather keep that than the mask.
Lucais: You're a douche and I hate you! HAHA, but seriously, thanks for the comments, man. Hurry and get your new PC and trick my Warrior out with some new gear, I'm sick of him wearing that shit pink chain mail gayness.
I highly doubt I'll get this guy finished in time for the comp, though this is definitely a project I want to continue on because I'm liking the direction its heading.
Thanks for the comments, guys. Updates soon (I hope).
I get the pyro feel too, but I like it aswell, I liked the swords too, but as you said he's too bulky.
I really like the "inflated" legs, I think it works well silhouette wise (although that is another component of the pyro ) hope you'll finish it man, even if it's not for the war, could be a neat UT3 dude
vahl: Thanks for the comments, dude. I was sad to see the swords go, but they just weren't working for my guy. Hopefully my new revision no longer gives you the pyro feel :P
shinja: Thanks for having a look at my entry, Chris. As I mentioned above, I hope the revision fixes the whole pyro look.
WoW realms were down for maintenance tonight so I got stuck into some paintover action. Had to fix this TF2 Pyro vibe my character had and hopefully this steers away from it some more. Its definitely not the final look of my guy, but getting closer.
Any crits on how I can kit this guy out some more, I'm probably just going to have to throw more packs on him, just so its ridiculously over the top :P
Thanks for stopping by and having a look.
Glad you like those axes bro. I love the snow theme and think they would really look bad ass.
yeah that front pack is hanging a bit low. Maybe a variation of the QB handwarmer. Something like this but more pack like. I like the front pack but yeah it would get a bit heavy on the nads.
Looking good so far...I'd probably sit his goggles on his head or around his neck ( or just have them removable )...so that you can get a bit of personality into his face.
Davision3D & IronHawk: The packs hitting the nuts is something I've looked at time and time again, but for some reason I just like that pack there. The design was drawn mainly from a paratrooper. But if you actually look at the proper proportions, the pack technically sits just below his cash and prizes :P
I'll see what I can do with it though. Thanks for the input guys.
Gav: Yeah, I'm not too happy with what is going on with the head at the moment. It was a very rushed design to push away from the Pyro look. I will revisit it some more over the weekend. I'll do a few variations with goggle placement, because I would like to have the face exposed.
rooster: I threw some of the mesh in mud today during my lunch break. I will be hopefully hitting the sculpting hard this weekend and will post updates as soon as I get them.
Really liking the design, shape is nice. As you said might be nice to expose the face instead of the goggles. Will say something more insightful once I've had more time to look at stuff.

the 1st minute or two of this stick out in my mind
from the Kenshin OVAs (samurai X in the U.S.)

now dont get me wrong im not saying go an anime style, more pointing out the weapon idea
even tho the guy gets owned its still a kinda cool concept that i think u could play with
edit: should also stress this idea is nothing like kratos in GoW, hence the video reference
