DWIII - 3D - Chernobyl - Untitled

I've been a lurker for a while, and I watched my friend and coworker Gavin (aka richkid) work on his entry for last year's contest so I decided to give it a shot.

These are just some quick silhouette ideas. The first idea I had was of a small child-like being riding on some sort of creature. The character would be an invoker of immense power who was raised by monks to be in a constant state of meditation. Essentially they would have no real interaction with the "real" world beyond use of force. I suppose it'd be kind of like a mindless killing machine with the face of peace and innocence. Not sure what element I would use, I suppose any one of them would be appropriate.

The second idea was of a female monk character. The first silhouette was more just for form, but the second is more along the lines of what I was thinking. Her costume would be a mixture of Buddhist monk and African tribal. I suppose she could either be an invoker or a stalker. Seeing as how living creatures are made up mostly of water, her most devastating attack is the ability to suck the water out of a creatures body. Which would essentially turn them into a lifeless husk. As for an artifact I was thinking of a set of shrunken heads attached to her staff.

hahahhha, i was reading the top and was like...what the fuck, who is this. glad you joined up.

i like the idea of the female priest a lot, what you got going on right now looks just like a guildwars concept though, so take that and run in a different direction. remind me at work and i will show you the pic.

    keep em comin

Haha, I live to confuse you.

Yeah, I just realized what image you're talking about. I'm going to have to dig it out and put a big red "no" on it.

More silhouettes of the monk character. I wanted to try to really elongate her like some of those ancient African paintings. I'm still not entirely sold on this idea, so I'm retiring it for now and will pursue other options in a different direction. She's feeling a bit "meh" and not so exciting.

This monk looks fairly generic at first glance, yet I cant really think of anything off hand you could do to enhance the silhouette without taking from the sleek simplistic monk style that we all recognize. Maybe a really elaborate head-dress with feathers and hay with a mask? Although it might be the pose that really sells this character rather than a dynamic silhouette. I like the exaggerated thin forms so far. Keep it up, its looking great so! smile.gif

    The pose looks great

not sure if this is much of a help, but check this guy's concept on the right. It's always been one of my favorites. Your silhouettes are pretty bangin' -- they help to reinforce the African theme (which I picked up on even before reading the post, I might add).

Ey chernobyl, welcome to the winning team wink.gif

I think your African monk idea is a nice base to start with, and what you have done now is indeed that. I love the thumbs, but they're not much more but a human with ornamental signs or basic clothing.

Africa, makes me thnks right away of witchdoctors, huge masks. Maybe cliche, but something like that would already add lots.

Just try to give the African theme a twist, it's fantasy, go nuts! Give it some spirit animal as a guide or something, explore and go crazy smile.gif Or some strange lion/leopard like skin to wear (including head ofcourse!) stuffs like that.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

Okay, so I totally ditched the African monk thing. I had even changed her to a clericon character with a more interesting profile, but I still think it lacked something. Instead I did these:

This as of yet unnamed character is a stalker class. He comes from a species that once had wings and the ability to fly, but evolution has reduced their wings to mere skin flaps. They however have retained the ability of being excellent climbers, and as such have been able to remain tree-dwellers.

Now you might wonder why this character has a baby strapped to his chest (in the top picture, in the bottom its on his back). That would be his granddaughter, and they are the last two survivors of their tribe. Taking refuge in a nearby temple, the warrior was told by a priestess that his granddaughter has the potential to become a very powerful clericon, and both warrior and child would be important players in war.

The warrior is highly skilled in combat, even though he is rather old and had, before the devastating attack, retired. He uses two bladed weapons attached to his forearms (to be detailed later) that unfold like a razor blade. That leaves his hands open for defense and grappling. Being low to the ground, it was suggested by a friend that he use a capoeira style of fighting. Could be interesting.

As of yet I'm not sure of their size, but I figure they'd be a bit shorter than humans at full height.

    Okay, back to work grin.gif

Hah! I dig the aardvark/bat design, interesting choice man. Definately much more original (altho' I didn't think the african idea bad just needed lots of work to make it 'pop'). While this...

Now this is something completely different. I like the idea of the baby, not to be a bitch about it, but maybe think about some extra protection? I mean if it is THE last, only and important offspring, well you'd wanna make sure it's going to be as protected as possible of course smile.gif

Anyway, very cool idea, very cool design, I think this will be a really promising piece.

Now, make it tasty and sexy!

Thats such a radically different direction, and one that far surpasses the original idea.

Whilst I generally hate tails on characters, I think that yours might benefit from one.

very original character, i'd go with the second one.

    Thanks for the comments!

Okay next image. I took what I liked from both images and mixed, matched, and created anew.

Pestibug: You're absolutely right, the baby does need a lot better protection. So I've created her a nice, snug, leather "armor" baby carrier...thing.

I put the baby on his front because it seems a slightly safer spot than his back. He can use his arms/weapons to shield her, whereas a baby on his back would leave her wide open for sneak attacks.

Speaking of weapons I'm having a bitch of a time trying to figure out how to get the things to function. I'm afraid my desire for plausible, working weapons overrides my need for coolness. If I have them open like a razor (ye olde fashioned ones) the blades are rather short, and near his upper arms rather than his forearms. Any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Love the concept and the idea.. abut the blade u can go for Altair style. weapon zipping out when triggered.. its fast and looks really cool in action.

Here are some artbook references of that mechanic, hope it helps smile.gif

    Yay! Tail!

you've got some lovely progressions here - the forearm straps going through the fingers work really well.
