Latest edit:
Playing around with the mount and I think I have a serious candidate:
it is basically two hands connected by a center 'chair' part. In a fight, the hands separate from the main part and burrow into the ground to attack enemies from below and leave 'Roaker' sitting on the chair part with the 'spike' stuck in the ground for balance. Colors are very preliminary, but leaning in that direction.
I think I'm going to definitely ditch the fur since all the rock and the shell gives him a lot of texture already and it becomes overkill with the fuzziness.

Edit: realized I'm eating through a lot of bandwidth with all these images, so the older ones will be links from here on out.
I hit a rough spot in the character design so I figured I'd work on the accessories and the old rusty robot thingie he'll be lounging on. So far no shots of the latter, but the former turned out surprisingly well after a few revisions.

Head study, not sure about colors so any suggestions on that topic would be particularly appreciated. The design still isn't entirely set, but I want to move ahead so I can have as much time to fail at modeling as possible.

Using gauss's repaint as a launchpad, I'm diddling around with the idea of him being on top of the artifact. The artifact will be significantly different in later sketches, but I left gauss's in there cause it looks cool and I am more interested in the dude on top at the moment.

First of a couple concepts I'm working on. I don't know if I will be attempting a 3d yet, but I haven't been able to finish one the last two years, so maybe a 2d try will fare better. We shall see how much time I have after I finalize the design.

Update: Another idea that came up while doodling, it is something that has recurred through my notebook doodles for years and I figured I just had to let it out.

Thats a pretty neat idea, and would fit under the rock earth theme quite nicely. Be cool to see that one worked up a bit.
New sketch posted.
Updated first post with head/color study.
the colors you chose are gonna rock out -- the eyes will totallyu pop against the complimentary orange in the head.
Looking good bud! I like the concept of the guy w/ the rock, but I think it was Gauss/Jack who suggested making the rock float with him riding it. I agree with that. A character weighed down by a huge stone doesn't seem like much of a threat.
[/ QUOTE ]He won't be a rock anymore. I've tried a few different designs and it just isn't working. It was originally going to be a rock embedded with robot parts and a skull and whatnot, but now I think I'll just go with the chest/arms/head of a robot, rusted and charred/melted from crashing on the planet, reanimated with magic and enslaved and leached off of by the old turtle dude to drag him around dismembered zombie style and do stuff.
if you can, find "tai chi masters" it is an old jet li movie...funny as hell. but there is a guy chained up to a rock because he is so powerful, maybe make it the same scenario, where he has been chained to this rock. i cant remember the greek character who has to push the rock up the hill all the time, ok, im rambling
i like him pulling the artifact, as a sign of dedication to both the war and his beliefs...there we go
Update at top.
as he crushes the school houses beneath his ginormous trampling feets!
Rusty robot silhouette
I'm not quite happy but leaning in this sort of simple-shaped IRON GIANT direction. Encrusted with rock and rusted half to dust.
It would be somewhat similar to my 'slick' concept but with rock instead of the oily goo.

Twins? Lol j/k, sorry couldn't resist. Thought it might make you giggle
