This should be interesting.

I want to break away from any sort of thing I have done before. As far from generic as possible. We'll see... my concepting skills are not the best.

Let's get the ball rolling with a couple of quick thumbnail doodles before bed:


Still don't know exactly which class/theme I will be going with. Some of them sound really interesting.

I love the shapes in the second one, MoP. His pose and the weapon just really fit together wonderfully, as well.

Quick and horrible one... the drawing is poor but I quite like the idea of having a guy with two sets of arms/limbs, one which holds an artifact for channeling/draining magic, and the other set are his "spell-casting" arms, so he steals with one set and attacks with the other.

Probably gonna do some more smaller silhouette thumbs based around this idea, see if it goes anywhere.

While I like the sketch based simply on how energetic it is, I do like your previous designs more. The two arms orcy bald guy is entering a slightly more cliched territory, I feel. the previous designs were more original in that respect.

same as the pea, nice dynamics in that sketch, but I liked the first batch more, the second one of that batch had a very cool silhouette too.
That's a personal taste but I'm not fan of the 4 arms thing (never been actually) but I'm sure that if you really want that you'll find a way to make it look cool and believable

Yep, I agree with you both, I still prefer the first 2, this new one was just a quick experiment with an idea... I still need to do some more thumbnails to explore that idea.

I don't really like the 4-arms thing either, I was thinking about trying to find a way to have the same effect but using something else (like a second set of unattached, "magical" limbs), or armour/clothing/items constructed in a way to get a similar effect of drain/attack in separate parts.

I like the samuray-ish feeling of the first one, but I think this one's a bit common. I suggest make it less human.

Digging the guy on the right in the first sketch MoP, alot of shapes that pull your interest. Looking forward to you fleshing this one out some more, the 4 arm guy could be cool as well.

depends where the second set of arms is coming out of. I've always thought the coxal would make a nice cradle for some arms; just stick 'em on in there beneath the iliac crest, there's plenty of room.

Caseyjones: Cachet recycled brown paper sketchbook ftw! Such a nice drawing surface, way more versatile than white. Makes anything you draw look pro too, or like a Da Vinci sketch if you use brown pen or dark red pencil

OK, well, I feel like I'm hitting my stride now. After seeing Per and Peppi (not to mention a huge amount of other inspirational artists!) throwing down their awesome thumbnails and ideas, I got a bit more motivated and did a bit of sketching in SymmSkribbl tonight (love that app, thanks Tacit Math!).

Here's my first new batch. I'm really liking #1 and #4 ain't too bad either. The others are filler really.



Thoughts?
I'm thinking I'm gonna head off down the avenue that #1 is beckoning from ... something really insanely huge, alien and monstrous. Not sure how I'll work the magic aspect in yet, we'll see!

I like #3 because he has more abnormal and stylized proportions. He almost looks jester like as well with his headpiece. Nice work so far, your progression is going great

#1 is dramatic/deadly looking in the orthographic pose alone. It should be incredible as it gets posed for real. It reminds me of a crab + other various sea creatures, maybe water/ice abilities? Magical Tridents are win, too. Very good, as always.

Man, I keep looking at number one and picturing this really elaborate battle dress on him. Like his entire outfit: cloak, shall, cape, skirt, you name it is decorative and underneath is this badass armour that is as intimidating as the costume was spectacular.

And!

When I picture him in motion, I see him slowly removing the battle dress (that a girly name for it? fuck it who cares) and revealing his all-powerful armour to his foe. Kind of like Bruce Lee removing his kungfu shirt revealing his bare skin:

Yah Paul, dunno why but that first one really struck me here. I'm not a fan of alien/arachnoid/reptilian theme designs so I guess thats why.

I agree with your last post MoP, I think everyone takes that aproach with the legs when it comes to a insect type of character. I think it might be interesting to add the lower body of an animal maybe, I dunno I think it might be an unique look.

considered making the legs thinner and the lower set of arms thicker so it pulls it self along with the arms and uses the legs mostly for support and digging in?

interesting... your blocked out forms are not how i had interpreted your thumbnail at all. i'd envisioned a much more vertical presence, almost as if it were hanging beneath the large mantel on top. to me, it was much more imposing than what you've got now which, though well done, i feel like i've seen before.

Looks like you need to push yourself a bit more, they keep getting better though dude. I think you are heading down the right path, by exploring the idea of coming up with a better idea for holding the artifact(other than 4 arms) you could come up with something pretty original and interesting.

Yeah, that is the exact sketch book I'm using as well! It does add a touch of pro to your work (which is why I use it... To hide my poor sketching skills :P).
Your new sketches are looking more refined, though I'm still a fan of your initial thumbs. Keep pushing, mate.

I was leaning towards 5 like Katzeimsack said ... seems to have much more presence and power IMHO.

The cool thing is, I actually like all of these as a starting point (and the last batch of 4), so at least I know whatever I pick it won't be something boring

5 and 8 are both pretty solid, I think it just depends on whether you wanna do a more humanoid character or monster type character. 5 being more monster like and 8 being more human like.

Think 8 is more the Stalker type whereas 5 would represent a Warrior type. Think they are both great
