I have been doing a little modeling the past while, but I havn't gotten serious about it till recently.
My friend and I are making a mod to Half Life 2, and I want to learn to do a great job on modeling. I know 3ds max, and would prefer it, yet I don't have money, so I use Maya 8.5 PLE.
I have made a head for my model, but the thing is, he has A LOT of polygons, i know you try to use as little as possible for optimization. I probably went a little overboard... I know textures have a lot to do with detail, but I suck at textures...
I need to learn textures, and how to make them very well, I have looked on the internet everywhere, found a bunch of stuff, but a lot of it is crap. Any suggested sites that are really great with the tutorials on texturing?
And also, does anyone here know the max or average polycount for a HL2 model?

Thanks! Even though the tutorials are in 3ds max (I would rather use it)but I have to use maya PLE as it is free. But i can still get great techniques from what i see!
I'm not terribly great at anything and I'm relatively new to 3d myself, but I found this method really nice to set up facial edgeflow.

One question though. In Maya, how do you get the pictures on the side like that?
I am hopfully going to be able to get 3ds max soon, so i can use that instead of maya, but for the time being i am using maya...
Look into using XSI Mod Tool. Free as well, and comes with exporters for Source, and has about the same functionality as the $800 version, minus Mental Ray. It has a small but rabid user base, so any questions you might have are pretty much guaranteed an answer.

I have it on my computer...but i would rather not learn a new modeling tool right now. I guess that may be a big reason i havn't modeled anything too good, because after learning 3ds max, we had to do a maya thing for school. Now i want 3ds max, but i am stuck with maya. I might as well just stick to this for now, though i might change in the future.
And by the sounds of it, if i get 3ds max, i can get plenty of help here
Here is the low poly of the head:

The high poly:

Please yell at me and tell me what i did wrong. This is a computer nerd, with huge glasses, so he might look weird. He doesn't have textures or hair...so ya...
EDIT: And there are some things in the high poly that need to be done. Like the ears...
Ok, i got an arm by making a 6 sided cylinder and extruding and stretching it. It looks decent, and i don't need all the muscles and stuff, since not only is this a nerd, he is wearing a t-shirt, so all you really see is a little of the bicep.
