Hey everyone,
I'm quite new to this site. Im currently half way done with my program ( game art and Design) , and I wanted to know how should I showcase my work if I was either an Environment modeler , character or texture artist?
The majority of the people in my major are quite confuse because in our portfolio, we showcase every single work from every single class, and I'm sure this isnt the type of portfolio employers would like to look at.
I'm thinking about being an environment artist ( maybe texture artist). I would like to know what does employer aim for in a environment portfolio? Initial sketches to concept art to 3D ? or various of different type of environment? or..

If you have good initial concepts/sketches that you've done for your environments, then include those too, but if your sketches or concepts aren't very proficient then I wouldn't bother, since at most companies an environment artist won't be concepting things much anyway.
Solid modelling and texturing is vital. Don't include character work if it's not up to the same level of quality as your environment work.
Basically the bottom line is only showcase your best and most representative work. Don't just throw everything you have together, because your work will usually be judged by the lowest quality piece in the site.
Have your gallery on your front page so it's easy to find. Have each thumbnail lead to a nice big shot of the real thing. And show the full in game piece, one with wires, and your texture sheet at minimum. Those could each be separate links, or links from within the full sized image of the rendered piece.
Also, is there any environment portfolio of some kind out there that would be the entry standard? Something I should aim for? Im going to be constructing 2 background next quarter for a class.( concept sketch to finish product)
I would like to be more expose to some great environments out there before I start.
I remember when I started doing concept paintings for class, I would have a list of all the great master paintings, and also great digital paintings stuff on my desktop, just to have some sort of inspiration and reference.
Thanks again guys

Also, I've seen a few people post or link their portfolios so maybe look at them to see a common pattern that you could adopt.
