I haven't had this happen in a long time and I never knew what it was back then, either. Non tiled alpha displays perfectly fine in my viewports, but there's a distinct alpha seam once they get tiled. I just wanted to know if anyone has had similar issues, and knows how to resolve it.
I have viewport alpha set to "BEST". I also tried in Max2008, with the viewports set to "BEST" for SM3.0. Still no dice. Here's a pic:

The only way I've seen it work is if I keep all of the UVs in the 0,1 box, and tile the material in the material editor. Sadly, that's not exactly compatible with the format I'm working with.

It looks fine in the engine, it's just super annoying to deal with while working on the texture.

Ouch. Thanks guys
Whenever I can get away with it for previewing, I usually just apply a duplicate material without alpha to the faces at the borders.
