Hello to all you incredibly talented people, I'm a game design student in my 5th month of training, which also happens to be my 5th month of 3D modeling. So go easy on me (or not)
My group is doing a UE3 based scene, and this is the rifle I am modeling for our main character. We are attempting a more exaggerated, less "realistic" look to our characters and forms, and the rifle was designed to have a customized, pieced-together look.
This is the result of few days of concept work on the shape and workings of the gun, and then a half day of modeling.

Just figured out the basic AO render process, anyone have tips on how to get nicer shadows? I'm guessing I'm just missing some lights in the scene?

What program are you using and what method? There are many different ways to render an AO map.
I used max with mental ray, with an ambient occlusion material. No lights, sample values at min 4, max 16. With these default settings, I get a lot of over exposed white areas.

Would that rifle be comfortable to hold for the hand?

Well it is based on this type of grip/stock:
I am planning on smoothing the area where the wrist would rest on the stock, but that is the general idea.
