does anyone have info on how bungie environment artists created the sky domes? i think they look very impressive and would love to see the technical side of it all.

Yeah same here. I am working on some right now and I have played with the forge and theater editor so much but it just doesn't help. I would love to see or read about how they did them as well.
As far as I can tell, its a portal sky, however rather than a envmap (Q3 etc), they used a half sphere for the inner clouds, then another half sphere for the actual sky. Then they just added quads for sun, and particle effects/models on the ground in the correct place.
Same method a lot of games use these days. They may of even just made it full scale without the portal sky, like ET:QW does. Have you ever noCliped in a ET:QW map? Those skies are HUGE.
