Starting with just two new items for the Medic, Valve are going to be gradually rolling out new, unlockable weapons for every class. These will be alternative versions of their current loadouts that, once unlocked by earning a certain number of achievements, you can pick and choose from on a new 'Loadout' menu.
The unlockables aren't just beefed up versions of the weapons, they balance major advantages and disadvantages to fundamentally alter the role of that class. The first Medic unlock, for example, is called the Overhealer. Instead of temporarily buffing people's health to 50% above their normal maximum, it permanently boosts them to double their standard health. The downside is that it'll be dramatically worse at building Ubercharge - in fact, Valve are toying with not letting it Uber at all.
No details on what the second unlock they'll be rolling out in this update will be, beyond the basics: it'll be another Medic healing ray, and it'll change the way the class plays all over again. The first is earned by acquiring half of the thirty-five new Medic achievements, the second for acquiring them all."
Sounds sweet. Though I can see that new medic weapon making engineer work more of a pain in the ass than it already can be when you have a demoman relentlessly after your shit.

Nailgun on the other hand... Watch the 2nd TF2 trailer they ever showed, just look at the scout. The asset is already done. Hopefully they bring demo dynamite back in. : ) I miss the MIRV.
However - I really hope the overall FEEL of the game never changes from these new additions.
35 achievements for the medic? That's ALSO AWESOME.
And Pyro fire rockets!!!
New map of escorting a mine cart... can we say a spy sneak in and stop the cart then have a couple demo's and snipers kill while they're distracted by the spy? not going to be a fun map, but I may be proven wrong.
Also I want more ctf maps don't like the trend of redoing ctf maps as control point maps.
i wonder what the hunted will even look like

The latest new is that is will not be very much like hunted at all, but more like the tank maps from ET, just that the tank is replaced by a "mine cart".
Probably fun too, but a real hunted mode would have been cooler in my opinion.
Edit: should have read what keg said
Issues: what about those of us that have a life? that don't have 6 hours a day to get all those bloody achievements.

Well it did mention that they aren't just buffed unlocks that will let you dominate over someone who doesn't have it. They are meant to be as balanced as the standard gear, just something different to keep things interesting I guess.
I haven't played TF2 in almost 2 months, maybe longer. But I think this will get me playing a few more games from time to time. I'm a sucker for achievements and unlockables.

If you "have a life" then you shouldn't care about any of this in the first place.
Maybe they won't be overpowered, but the med gun that doubles a teammates health could be quite bad when combo'd with a heavy and a medic healing
Edit: my point about those with a life is that those of us that enjoy the game, but don't have 6+ hours a day to spend obtaining these achievements won't get them anytime soon if at all.
you can still play it and have fun if you dont have everything unlocked... odds are every game you've ever played has had content you didnt get to see because you didn't play it 6 hours a day
You personally may no be able to double your teammate's health, but you can still heal and you can still ubercharge. You can still play the game the same you've always played it. Eventually you'll rake up enough stats to unlock something.

On the flip side I understand a dedicated player who wants to work towards achieving something.
The best solution would probably be just to have servers with full unlocks on if you wanted it that way. So those of us who just like to jump in to play occassionaly, don't get screwed.
Yeah, I'm not too sure about the unlockable stuff either. If it throws off the balance of the game, IE pitting yourself against an enemy with an unlockable weapon giving him the advantage because he's played the game longer.. pretty lame.

Sorry, but did you even read the article? They aren't going to give you an advantage, but rather another way to play the game. It clearly states:

I have faith in valve that they will do a good job testing and balancing the unlocks, seeing as they did make TF2 in the first place.

No.. I didn't read the entire article and that's my bad. However, not too continue complaining for the sake of it but the principle still remains that the "casual" user of a MP gets restricted for not playing enough. I fully understand the cool factor of working to achieve something and it would seem fair just to have the option of allowing individual servers where anyone has access to the unlocks. They did this in BF2 and it was nice. The ideas of these new weapons in TF2 is really cool.
Acc: sorry for liking to get out and enjoy being with other people.

Obviously you don't do that enough if you care about extra content for a class that you don't have enough time to even play in the first place. If you were playing the game enough to be bored with the classes already then getting achievements would come naturally; you can probably get half of them in 2 rounds.
So basically, STFU with the "I'm so cool I have a life" skit when you're whining like a super obsessive nerd. You either a) play enough to get the extra content anyways, or b) don't play enough to need it in the first place.

w00t.
I think it would be fantastic if the syringe gun did a small DOT.
Who else knows what I am talking about?
I wasted a good part of my teenage years on those maps...
