ID required to do a free lance Contract!! WHAT DA?

HI I need some advice from the freelance veterans, I have been offered a supposedly part time contract position for a new developing company, and I wanted to find out if any one here has ever been asked to provide a copy of their ID in order to do the work.
Now here’s the catch I live in the US the contract it’s in Norway.
More likely I know that I’m not going to go for it unless we can work some other way that wouldn’t involve having my identity stolen the easy way DAWN IT.
What do you guys think, am I been too skeptical here? Has any one ever been told this crap before?

i guess its a proof of who you are, you can give them just the data they need ( the number of your id ) i had a contract that required any legal proof of id and all i did was to give them my identity number. all they needed.

Yeah, if they are a respectable company, you shouldnt need to send a copy of your id, just the number that they can then look up later.

err well for contract work don't you think you'll need to give them also your baking info and all that stuff ?, dunno but it sounds normal to me, maybe it also has to do with the law in Norway about freelance work.

Yeah...its only questionable when they ask for your pin number.

my ID has never been required for contract work. Have you tried asking them why they need it? Might be necessary for taxes or something there.

There might be a middle ground, depending on what they want it for. You might be able to censor out some information on your ID if they don't need it and you feel it's a privacy violation.

On the surface outside of Tax and other legal obligations, why would they care if you say you are who you are as long as they get the work they want ?

different countries have different tax requirements or even insurance requirements. Just ask them why they need it, and if they really do, as long as its a reputable company, give it to them. Theres not a lot you can do with just a driver's liscense.

I've always had to provide my ID and Soc card for jobs, but I'm not in 'the industry'. It's usually for tax purposes. I'm not sure how that would change for freelance work though. They probably intend to treat you as a temporary employee.

Hey Guys thank you for all of your advice. I did asked why and it turns out they require it to validate all documents regarding bank transactions, tax and other financial payments in their country.
Heeem what do you know any ways it made me feel more comfortable to hear from those of you who have already been through this. I guess this isn’t really a big deal as I was tripping out about.

What's with the "DAWN IT.!!" ? is it a polite way of saying damn it? Because subsituting one word for another is really quite ridiculous. 'It's just words', anyone?

thanks for reading my post. in a polite way dont know why but so far MightyPea you seem to be the only one making a big deal about it, Here in the US it's taken more likely as a joke quote rather then a serious saying. so forgive me for those of you foreign Folks who I might unintentionaly offended for the next time I'll try to be more internationally out spoken.
