I was wondering if there is a way to get vertex lighting to show up with the DX display of Standard Material option checked on in Max.
Because I have vertex lighting on this violin Im working on and as soon as I turn on DX display it takes off the vertex lighting.
also how do I get the alphas to work with DX display on?

either a) use a bespoke directx shader which supports vertex colour/alpha.
b) make sure 'shaded' is pressed in in the object properties dialog, as well as vertex channel display being set to colour.
edit: usefully, max's 'show directx in viewport' thing doesnt actually show the vertex colour, unlike the default viewport shader! so i guess best option is bespoke shader.
shaderfx is a wicked tool, or you can probably rustle up someone's shader off this board if you dig around.
if its not max someone else may be able to help.
hope it works!

The alpha maps didn't work with it so I ended up e-mailing the guy about it and he fixed it so alpha maps work. So now Im set.
Heres the results.
