Need some suggestions on a drawing I've been working on.
I'm planning on trying to put more colors and contrast in the flowers, and I want to see if I can get some depth of field going on by blurring the ones at the top and bottom. Not sure what to do about the background though. Any suggestions on that or anything else?

Tried mocking up some tests for the background, were pretty ugly. Pretty crappy ugly actually. Can't even seem to pick any colors to work with it. Any blues/greens/oranges or anything near and the flowers/grass that I've got going already don't show up.
And notice that the image had depth of field...once you have these elements present you can play with some lens blur for the effect.
or just painter/ photoshop?
Better or should I keep trying for some color background?
Was assuming light from the top, somewhat based lighting off the image. I'm using soft pastels to make this. Pretty easy to work with, although a bit messy at times, kinda limited on colors so I'm hoping I can blend some together a bit.
