I have a question, I know that a Color has a warm and cool version of it. how do you go about mixing this digitally? is the cool version for example of red just a lower saturated red? I feel this is an important thing that would take my painting to the next level. Combined this with the variation in saturation across the painting it seems overwhelming. Wish I had paid more attention in color theory, I can't seam to wrap my mind around this. I really want to try to add more color variation and make stuff less monochromatic. I bet the solution is simple to understand I feel ashamed...

and no, desaturating a color does not make it cool. Some colors are cool and some are warm.
"The determination of whether a color appears warm or cool is relative. Any color can be made to appear warm or cool by its context with other colors."
[/ QUOTE ] <-- How do I achieve this? This is exactly what I am looking for an answer to. I can't grasp this concept of color relationships to make a color to appear warm or cool. Even a book that goes into great detail about this would be helpful.

Gnomon Workshop - Practical Light and Color
I own this DVD and it is by far one of the best instruction videos of traditional art introducing color and lighting. This covers your question and a lot more. If you're serious about improving I would pick it up or find a friend that may have a copy.
