hey jessy. so. vista 64... most xp programs work with it?
or like. di i need to get 64bit versions for them?
i use max 8for exameple. i need to get the 64 bit versiona nd what not yeah?
photoshop cs3 works ok on vista64?
VistaSP1 beta test is available to the public, and there's significant speed increases with it. Most apps work in Vista, and that's where everything is heading, like it or not. I think MS said they're cutting support for XP after 2009, or something like that. May as well make the move now.
It's really just a matter of preference. I've been running XP and Vista Ultimate64 in dual boot for some time now. I haven't used Vista much, but I do like it. I've been waiting for SP1 to come out for the most part. I have lots of hardware for gaming, and most of the drivers aren't Vista64 ready yet.
I have it totally customized now so I get rid of a lot of the annoying security / safety issues and it runs everything smooth.
I love it and yeah it's damn sexy.

Amen to that...
as for which OS to install, i'd install MAC OSX Leopard (64bit) just to call yourself a real man, then when you realise how much money you just saved by not buying a mac that runs on pc hardware to do it, you can afford to buy the wife and kids you always wanted
Plan on re-installing the OS, shit happens. Partition a section of the drive just for the OS, get it all running the way you like, then back up that partition. Makes it much easier to re-install the OS if the HD dies or you get hit with a virus.
I'm planning to upgrade almost my whole system soon, and i'll definitely stay with XP on it for a looooong while, even tho it will have a DX10 capable card.

so. i have. a core2duo E6600, 2 gigs of SLI ram, 8800gts. harddrive 320gb.

What's SLI RAM?
Looking at your specs I'd recommend XP, 32-bit. 64-bit if you plan on upgrading to 4 gigs of RAM (which you should consider at this point).
I've been testing Vista regularly since its time in beta, and it's not optimal for what you want to do on your PC. If you just want a PC for general use, Vista will probably fit your bill. But if you want to get the most from your machine, XP probably what you want.

Seriously though, it depends on what apps you want to use, and what hardware you have.

Also use zbrush 2,3, mudbox and many more.
A 64 bit OS offers no advantage with 2 gigs RAM, but if you eventually plan to exceed 4 gigs (including vram), then you'll want a 64 bit OS.

If the reason is DirectX 10 then you're in for a trap
