I'm working on a model of an old-school barbarian/gladiator character. Think Barsoom / MoTU / Conan. I haven't finished concepting him, but this art will give you the right idea:
Here's the base mesh + UV map. Accessories will cover the seams in the hip area, but the seams on his back seem like they could be trouble.

Dont subdivide a low poly model like that. It looks terrible.
His eyes are too big.
Your UV map is going to be FILLED with distortion. Apply a checker material to the model and fix the distortion.

aesir- thanks for the critique of the proportions. I made the alterations you suggested. The eyelids may still need to be more defined in the base mesh, but other than that the face sculpts OK in tests.
Here he is with a test pattern on him. Because this is for sculpting I prioritized aligning the UV's with the texels, rather than minimizing distortion. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here?

I've started in on the sculpting- I'm trying not to rush into detail like a noob. I have a bad habit of getting lost in fiddly details, which is something I really need to address because I plan to do this professionally.
Basic muscles are in place, upper body is fairly unrefined at this point. I haven't touched the head yet. Accessories are extremely rough.
Accessories could be more original, for sure.

Thanks for the crits, all. I'll definitely tweak his leg length and chest/shoulder width. And I'll keep your suggestions about his face in mind when I begin sculpting it. More soon...

Quick update- here's the first pass on the head. The rest of the body has been minimally altered (mostly proportion tweaks) but nothing deserving of a full update yet.
P.S.- This is the first time I've sculpted ears instead of modeling them. What's the general consensus on putting them in the mesh vs. displacement map?
looks like your ears are sunken into your head a bit much, at least in back.
