I'm not seeing much discussion about this:

The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.

A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old.

They also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference.

Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said.

No offense but I think the "Lakota" medicine revenues just might be able to fund this whole movement.

[/ QUOTE ] Also known as the black hole of the US.Would anyone really notice? It's probably just another PR stunt like what they pulled way back when with their mock decoration of independence and take over attempts. Sounds like they want to reap the benefits of living in America but not be part of it. I wonder how serious anyone important will take this? If you want America to maintain your roads, sell you food, gas, and provide services then they'll have to deal in some way I would imagine? With that kind of power to make their lives that miserable I think the US can and will still have a huge amount of leverage.

More then likely if anything does become of it, the law enforcement agencies will just let it become a large lawless hole where the dregs of society gather. Kind of like the reservations now... It's already a pretty common practice to treat native Americans as dirt, rape em, beat em up, who cares its up to the tribal authority which can only act on tribal land. At best they can do to someone from the outside is file a complaint for the state department to follow up on, which they never do.

Maybe they have pulled together some means to self govern. At least it would give them the means to deal with outsiders. But the chances are great they are full of hot air... again.

I didn't think it worked like that.

Can... can I claim some land for my own country? Do I need a cool name for my bloodline first? Or can that come afterwards?

Oh yeah, my land would be tax-free. Mostly.

he doesn't legally represent the sioux nation, and whatever he says may or may not have been authorized by the sioux, so until theres some other announcement i'm going to call bullshit and say it's a personal publicity stunt to raise awareness of native american plight

haha now the US Army can really annihilate the indians.

Send in the calvary boys. Seriously this isn't going to be valid and this isn't going to turn out good for them in the end.

the Cherokee nation is its own nation according to US treaties and law, they have their own government, set up their own school system, and take care of their own affairs with little to no US government involvement... yet they still have to pay US taxes.. the Cherokee that spoke with us thought that was pretty funny.

that said.. it says a group of Lakota leaders (Sioux is kinda derogatory and not their word for themselves) so i doubt these people actually represent the whole of the nation. there have been several movements over the years like this....

just looked him up.. yeah... AIM is NOT associated with the legal representatives of any Indian Nation...... they have had many 'uprisings' and some of them have not been very pleasent.

they fail to realize just how dependent they are on the US. take away the money and the place will just rot from the inside out. as sad as the state of native affairs are, this will only make things worse on themselves. it takes a lot to run and create a country, there are just not enough people to do it. and being INSIDE the US, anything they do that the US doesnt like, well it's blockade time, nothing in or out. things are just too far gone to try this sort of stunt.

I support everything from Order 66 and I also supported the Empires domination and rule on the moon planet of Endor. I hate little teddy bears. They just cause too much ruckus.

I assume they didn't hear about Dixie?

Then again, if they grab the Dakotas I don't think anyone would notice.

I'm from that so called "black hole of the US". I've been to Pine Ridge many times, Wounded Knee, Little Bighorn and all those places you've only heard of. What this guy says is true - the U.S. has continually fucked over the Indians and broken their own treaties countless times. For example - we gave them the Black Hills in those treaties - until we found gold there. "Out you go!" In exchange for this prime land that is holy to you, we give you this other land that you can't grow anything on (not that that really matters - the Lakota never were farmers). Oh wait - we decided we to build a railroad through here. So here! Take the badlands. Not only can you still can't grow anything, but in addition to that, there is no water! Enjoy!

That said - they really haven't done anything to try to better their lives. Those who still live on the reservations live in squalor. Whole towns of people living basically on welfare doing nothing all day except watch TV. It's a people that have just given up - so depressing. Taking away what little U.S. support that we provide will wipe them out faster than I care to imagine.

I'm happy that this guy is trying to stand up against this stuff. But this definitely isn't the way to do it. He is only going to get laughed at as proven by the posts in this thread. frown.gif

    SoDak for life!

considering we broke some treaties and took the sacred Black Hills for gold and then carved some of our presidents' faces on those sacred mountains... the US would probably notice. tongue.gif

oh and labeling the article as "Descendents of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse" is very misleading... i dont think this guy has any direct ties to either of those two.

i actually got to hear Sitting Bull's great-grandson speak this past October in Cherokee, NC. the US government has finally given in and is relinguishing their hold on the remains of Sitting Bull and his affects. he is going to be removed from his current burial spot and moved to his homeland and given a proper native burial. smile.gif

He has a pretty good burial spot at Mobridge on a cliff overlooking the Missouri river. And I think that is where he was from. Is this what you are talking about?

i think that is where the US government buried him, against the wishes of the family IIRC.
