Exec producer can have a huge say in what happens at times can they not? I was under the impression that often it was useless but that sometimes the executive producer took a large part in the film making? I dunno, maybe I'm out of the loop.

the producer has a large role in the overall scope of what a film is going to turn into, but hes not the director. The director still handles most everything. The producer just makes big meaningless decisions like: ALL HOBBITS MUST BE 9 FEET TALL. THE DRAGON SHOULD BE AFRICAN AMERICAN. and stuff like that. They worry about target audiences and ratings and stuff like that.

The fact that Jackson is involved means that Weta is involved. And that means a whole hell of a lot since they have access to everything they did on LotR. That alone is cause to be happy.

Exec Prod changes a lot depending on who it is. Bruckheimer for instance has a HUGE say in everything he does (unfortunately). For many others they are hardly involved. I have a feeling Jackson will be in the former group.
