Hey all,
Is there a 'grey scale guide' or something like that that shows what shades of grey represent different materials in a specular map? ie, metal, wood?

Yeah. It's less about what value represents what material and more about the difference in value between one material and the next.
ie- most metal would have a higher specular value than most wood.

Are you limited to greyscale?
To distinguish metal from wood, color can be very useful.
Generally speaking, metal textures have like-colored specmaps while wood textures have grayscale or opposite-colored specmaps.
