When I did a few high rise buildings back then I used 3 or so textures mostly and one if say the building had a dome on top...of course how its gonna be shown will affect it.
...sorry
don't forget to model a boewing and some taliban to go with it =]

Some of the more complex buildings with more unique appearance I'd use a separate texture for it.
And from the complexity of it prolly no more than 3 textures as you can fit a lot of details on those.
Ben Mathis has a texture tutorial on how to break up pieces in a texture so that you can use parts of it on the same texture if you need to.

anyways i stared work on my skyscraper but instead of making a long box :P i went the modular rout ill be making a modular lobby and roof also and different textures.what does everyone think?
Find a building that fits what you need to make and make everything you would need to make that building. Then from those parts try and make different ones.
the building on the left to the bottom.
The one before doesn't really qualify as a building either...it resembled more of a column of some sort with the repeated textures and all.
