Well, if you live in the states and have a wireless connection you may want to look into buying a big bucket to hold everything that goes through the series of tubes that is the interwebs.

Seems that the house just overwhelmingly passed a new bill that will require people to report all "obscene" stuff and store all internet traffic "indeffinitely".

Hope all of you American's have lots of storage space. :P

the reasons behind this bill seem good ones but the implementation seems wacked to me. Do people actually have to pay attention to stuff like this? will most people just ignore it? its just not really feasable and seems an unneccesarily large stress to put on good law abiding citizens.

and certain obscene visual depictions including a "drawing, cartoon, sculpture, or painting." (Yes, that covers the subset of anime called hentai).

I could see banning hentai depicting children, but they can't mean banning all hentai.

    this part caught my attention:

Not one Democrat opposed the SAFE Act. Two Republicans did: Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning presidential candidate from Texas, and Rep. Paul Broun from Georgia.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The wording on this bill is dangerous and stupid. I'm glad someone in there has some sense to realize this.

    [ QUOTE ]
Rep. Nick Lampson probably drafted this legislation a little too hastily. It didn't go through the normal committee process and was rushed to the floor without the final text being posted until the day after the vote.

Next you have to put cameras in your neighbours bedroom and monitor everything they do there...
Then they figure its too much work for the average citizen and decide to put everyone in a solitary cell.

Nothing good comes when people are forced to spy on eachother. When shit like that happens people start to abuse it..
It was like that here in 1940s, you didnt like your neighbour, you went to "police" and made up a lie about said neighbour, next thing you know, his/hers house gets raided by the "police" and they will be on the next train to Siberia.

You won't need the 500tb drives when you start getting off on government issued hallucinogenics. First the anti terrorism stuff when you can anonymously report people you suspect, then this, say goodbye to your civil liberties! Slowly but surely you will be left with none.

[/ QUOTE ] Technically no, not as I read it. They have to store it but are not required to monitor it. Nothing stopping them from looking it over if they want to tho. It only applies to people who provide public Wi-Fi, but I'm not sure if it covers idiots that fail to lock down their home network, or if someone borrows your connection for a while. It's not like the base level of Wi-Fi protection is all that secure...

The law fails to be specific in hopes of catching as many fish as possible. Thats the problem with drift net fishing, you end up catching everything. Keep my laws Dolphin safe please thanx.

"Vote democrat we're getting things done! We protected your childz from the tenti-porn on the interboobies. Think what we could get done if we had a dem president!"

Personally I like a dead locked government, or one that is on constant strike. Shit just runs smoother when they aren't.

    From Sen. Nick Lampson's spokesperson:

"... child pornography is illegal, grotesque, and has become a global epidemic. The Internet serves as virtual hunting preserve for pedophiles and predators to prey upon innocent children. So, while this bill is not intended to impact the groups you reference, those groups, all of us, have a civic and moral obligation to report these criminal acts that exploit and traumatize children."

Really? Now that I think about it ... I don't think I've ever met anyone who talked to someone who knew some dude who heard about a child pornography case affecting his community. I only know that child pornography is a global epidemic because politicians and old ladies who watch network news tell me it is. Is this really something we need to worry this much about?

Last time i checked it was almost damn impossible to make your WiFi secure, from anyone who knows a bit what they do.
Soo if you cant secure it you almost share it... thats what they say when they drag your ass to court.

I would hardly classify 30,000 incidents a year as an EPIDEMIC... thats about 1 in every 10,000 people... so now the 9,999 are forced by law to weed out the 1? nice way to go, fucking terrorists now child pr0n what else should the sheeple be affraid about?

this is fucking retarded, they need to find better uses for their ridiculous government sallaries, other than forcing people to spy on each other making sure there is no hentai or child porn or other BAD stuff happening

I do believe that's trumped by laws making it illegal crack someone's wifi, it's bundled up in one of those anti-terrorism bills somewhere. It may be there's no laws covering the actual cracking but there are concerning the unauthorized access of said network.
