Now that the cat is out of the bag we can talk about it. The people starting up Figure Prints are members of my WoW Guild, Liquid Courage. I'm such a nerd. They did prints for the guild exclusive while they where working out the kinks. It was a massive undertaking and it was great that they where able to partner up with Blizzard. They are going to make bank... and by bank I mean bank.
Not that I'm biased or anything but they do look pretty awesome, best rapid prototyping evar! The only down side is that they feature some the poly/blockiness of the regular wow player models. So armor lines that are "painted into the texture" won't be extruded on the figure. Its a VERY faithful print of the 3D models. They do tweak each model to minimize clipping and I think they might smooth them out.
From what I understand they are made of a material that's a lot like plaster. Then they are dipped in an epoxy resin which makes them hard.

why couldn't they do it with a decent game, like mario?

like mario? yeah cause you can totally customize your own avatar in any mario game ever made. so it would be completely personal and worth the money. /endsarcasm
i think they've made the best choice actually. as much as i dislike WoW, what better game market is there to tap into, as an up coming company, than one which has like, the whole world hooked on its drug?
in future i'd love to see them get a license from squeenix or something, so you could look at posing a final fantasy character, and having it rendered for your desk. that'd be sweet. there's lots of potential out there, they just need to tap into it.
too bad i didnt have any characters i had an emotional attachment with.
and ive given up the game, but it would have been sweet to get one of these made.
If I did play the game I wouldn't want to buy a figure anyway. Why you ask? Because the game is all about Epics and gear and getting the newest best shit to wear/wield. So your fancy character figure will be outdated in a month when your character looks different because of your new gear.

Thats kinda the point of renewable financial gain. New tier, new figure, now you have multiple figures noting your transition to uber-leetness. The new expansion will most likely add 2 new tiers. I find it hard to picture 2000 people on the server at lvl 80 small grouping illiadin(sp?) and running around with tier 6 gear with little effort.

i want one, and i don't even like the game.
Off Topic: I want some damn UT3 Figures!
is it just me or did that dude in the video look like he was going to weep happy tears of joy?
Wasn't there a Non Official site doing this awhile back?

Great idea, but the original concept of this came from an opengl model extractor app: http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/files/world-of-warcraft-mid.jpg
Other than that, enjoy your metric ton of cash.

I had just been considering hacking in a nude Jessica Alba player model. Obviously great minds think alike!

This is pretty cool. They still look a lil' fuzzy but it's a step in the right direction. Too bad you can't just send them any model to get a color print.
Gaming Steve's video about it and some good pics

I could care less about WoW and the figure printing... I'm just glad you posted because I didn't know Gaming Steve was updating regularly again!
