What makes something epic?

Whether it's a battle, a piece of music, a scene... What do you think makes something seem 'epic'?

Epic does involve scope, but also personal visceral impact.

Epic combat, epic adventure, epic metal, epic novels etc all are usually not just complex, but have a lot of gut emotional impact.

Epic combat would involve nearly inhuman movements and skill. Things like DBZ (when they're actually fighting), and the matrix combat sequences could be considered epic combat, along with this video.

Epic adventure involves visually impressive locations, far ranging characters, and those great deeds like saving the universe, but all done with style.

Epic metal has complex symphonic influences, often tells a story, but certainly has a very powerful feeling associated with it.

Things that leave you going "wow" or "oh no they didn't.. they did!" tend to be indicative of things that are epic.
