I haven't used it myself, but I've worked with a few people over the years that have. They swear by it... especially the SpacePilot. I'm happy enough just using my wacom though.
actually i have the space pilot sitting right here on my desk. I use it a lot when painting in photoshop and for a few camera things in max and navigation.
In max / maya it has a bit of a learning curve but in photoshop its great.
Also i think they have a 30 day trial so you might want to look into that.
I;ve used it, and didnt really like it. I think I've posted on this on this forum before. It might be good for some people, but for a me a mouse is better.
One of the guys at work uses it, looks like it can be handy if you are comfortable with it as you can navigate purely with that. Apparently very handy with mudbox, but not with Zbrush as it just takes over functions of other keys and zbrush of course is prett different for navigation.

Just make sure you try it before you buy it.
Also check Ebay. I got my wacom off there for about half price. A quick check showed a few space pilots for like 240 buy it now price.
One common major problems with these things is that they cost as much as what they're supposed to replace.
