Nice... but I still don't think its really possible to make a Watchmen movie that stays true to the comic. Hell they screw up simple comic book characters 90% of the time. How are they going to go with something as dense and mature as the Watchmen.
My only hope is that because the Watchmen is such an adult oriented series, production will be wise enough not to attempt to dumb things down for a pre-teen market (Spiderman anyone?).
Regarding the film being dumbed down, I don't think this is really an 'action figure' tie in for the studio, like Spiderman, X Men and others. The characters aren't strong enough (brand wise) for that, so they'd be better targeting the twenty somethings, the 'Minority Report' audience and making it a more intellectual sci-fi pic. We can only hope so, anyway.
Dammit.. I'd almost purged my memory of that fecking travesty...
You raise a valid point though - the filmmakers could futz with the characters and plot as much as they liked, since they're not that well established in popular culture. (Not as well as the major Marvel/DC ones anyways).
Watchmen is a 12 issue miniseries comic from twenty years ago (which I read when it first appeared) It was one of the first 'graphic novel' style books and was the only one to receive a Hugo award. It had (has) a fantastic storyline and visual style. The wikipedia entry has more.

my guess is that if you think they did a good job staying faithful with 300, you will probably enjoy Watchmen.

Yup, you gotta respect what Zach Snyder did with 300. No reason to think he won't treat Watchmen just as seriously.

Still think this would be better done as a HBO miniseries or something

Yup again. There's no way they can fit the entirety of Watchmen into a two hour film without cutting a lot of the background material. Still, I'm fine with that if the end product is entertaining. Trying to copy a book or graphic novel scene-for-scene is kind of ridiculous anyway, the medium doesn't lend itself to that.
Haha.. Damn these TLA's (three letter acronyms). The only downside with a HBO mini-series is that we in the UK would probably get it a year late.. And because I don't have Sky TV, I'd have to wait for the DVD release a year after that. Bugger.

looking forward to this huge amounts, so far they have the visuals down at least, here's hoping they don't fuck it up

So you think Watchmen as a 2 hour movie is better suited then a miniseries where each episode could focus on each chapter?
