What's your opinion on flu shots?

It's "flu season" again, started about a month ago. Some people I know are praising flu shots, other people, like myself, think flu shots are a bunch of bullshit. Every year the news reports that the flu epidemic is worse and that there's even more of a shortage of the vaccine. At my studio they had someone come and give flu shots to who ever signed up for one.

What is your opinion on flu shots? Do you get them annually? In your experience has getting the shot or not affected how sick you've gotten during the winter season?

I've gotten flu shots twice in the past. Each time I did, I got the flu that year. My immune system doesn't need a damn boost. I eat well, take vitamins and heal remarkably fast. It's been 8yrs since I caught the flu, and I don't expect to get it anytime soon.

If you're young and healthy, I wouldn't worry about the shot. It's more important for the elderly. If your immune system is weak, it's probably good to get one as well.

Bullshit! As a medical school student they wanted us all vaccinated, I had a cold during the vaccination week so missed the dates. I should probably take it soon.

Also have a bad experience with it, most of the times i take it i got the flu a few months later. While i don't usually get it on the other years. Time will tell this time ha laugh.gif

Growing up one year when I was in college my mom started insisting on flu shots like they're supposed to save your life. I caved the first year, and got the shot. Second year I decided not to, meanwhile the rest of my family got theirs, and got sick and missed work/school for a week each, while I remained perfectly healthy. Since then I'm convinced the vaccine is a joke. I'll get a bad illness every other year or so, and it will occur any time of the year.

The flu shot helps your body get ready to defend itself against that virus in case it tries to invade your body. The flu shot contains a small amount of dead, or killed, flu viruses. The flu shot won't give you the flu, but those dead viruses are enough to get your body's immune system ready to fight off the real flu when it comes around this winter.

To be protected against the flu, you have to get a flu shot every year. Unlike some other illnesses, like chickenpox, the flu virus keeps changing. The vaccine needs to change to keep up with the type of flu that is expected to cause problems that year.

Each year, doctors and scientists who study the flu try to predict which virus will make people sick during the next flu season. Then they make the vaccine out of a mixture of the three most likely viruses.

basically, don't take it unless you HAVE TO.

if they invent one for explosive diahrreia im all in for it!

some vaccinations etc are money making on the health industry like stuff to take twice as much dosage altho you dont need it. it actually duplicated sales on those products.

[for the slow] i catually dont have explosive diahrreia but would be cool huh ! smearing shit all over !

It gives you a non-fatal weak flu so your antibodies can catalog it, and are better prepared to fight a fatal flu outbreak. I'd rather be sick for a week and be less likely to die from an outbreak flu, than not. Vaccines have a few types, flu happens to be dead flu cells in the majority, but others can contain living cells. It can't give you the flu, see the 2nd link. If you get the flu after a shot it is because you were exposed to it before the shot.

What you are experiencing is normal, you just stay uninformed by your medical professional so that loonies don't freak out about 'OMG your giving me teh fluz?!?'

never get them. only get sick twice a year, maybe. a minor cold in winter and then crappy sinus stuff in late summer. and usually a couple mugs of Thera-flu, rest and a few thick blankets kicks it out of my system.

as long as you take care of yourself i think you'll be fine. if you aren't eating, you are running all over getting Christmas presents, working late, etc.. then your body will be much more prone to illness..
then there are those who do get sick and still do all the running, around spreading their sickness to everyone.... i'd like to see the US start adopting the face-mask like in asian countries.

of course it's worse every year.. vaccinating most of the population only makes the virus stronger. tongue.gif

Actually you won't get the flu Motz. At least it is not expected. The Flu vaccine don't contain virus, neither dead or alive. It is just glicoproteins of the virus, and as PeterK explained well for the 3 virus WHO expect to be the most prevalente this year. Your body is able to react to those glicoproteins and create a few spare memory lifocits for a future flu break. Some vaccins indeed contain a live virus (it is a attenuated though) or a dead virus. It is not the case of the Influenza.

Indeed, you just must to take it if you are too old, imunnedepressed, or work/study in a hospital. If it works good with you and you like to take it's ok. If you don't want to take it and you aren't on one of those situtions i listed you don't really have too. At least this is the health ministery guidlides here in Portugal.

I can get a flu shot for free every year, because I'm asthmatic. I've been forgetting about it for years on end now, maybe on purpose because they'd always treat me as if I were a six year old. "This might hurt a bit, just look in the other direction, you can squeeze in my hand if you like to."

i think they are pretty unnecessary for the most part unless you are elderly or a small child. the flu shot they give you is for what potentially is going to be the flu going around, and theres dozens of strains and they vaccinate you against a handful at best, so if you are going to get the flu, you are going to get it and it's not really doing anything but costing money. i havent had them in several years and only got the flu twice in my life, in years where i was vaccinated.

I don't think I've ever had a flu shot. Maybe once when I was 8 years old or something. Last shot/immunization I had was for polio and tuberculosis. Then again I am in the UK, not USA.

That sounds spot on to me. I don't get the shots myself. I've heard many doctors, including specialists in the human immune system say the shots aren't necessary for someone my age (22). If I were particularly unwell because of an injury or illness which might weaken my immune system, I'd consider getting a shot.

I'm not sure how correct this is, but I'm also of the mind that if you take things like this when you don't need them, you stand to weaken your immune system for the future. As it may become dependent on those shots to be at full strength.

No, the immune system doesn't work like that (take my word as a molecular biologist for that, too lazy to explain).

Makowka, My father-in-law has a friend in the CDC that says when bird-flu can be transmitted to people through the air that we can expect a 60% mortality rate; paraphrased and the source (father-in-law) is dubious, at best. What are your thoughts?

I encourage anyone to watch this highly informative video. Starts off with Vaccinations / mercury poisoning / autism. 1:30:00 long. Yes its long, but it blew my mind. Very well presented too. It just might make to think differently.

(the real talk starts about 1 min 30 seconds in)

@ Swampbug: Didn't listen to it completely (quit after he started to rant about all sorts of conspiracy theories) but from what I can tell, he didn't present a single reason against vaccines except for "well they put mercury in some of them and that probably has some health effects" (But authism is still far from understood, and a case about as strong as the one he presented could be made for aluminum or genetic defects).
In fact vaccines for serious deseases (not the flu one) are one of the few true success storys of modern medicine, and have probably prevented much more suffering than any of the side effects have caused (even *if* everything in that video was true).
That said, yeah the pharma industry and their connections to politics are seriously fucked up.

@8ftSpider: Pretty much the worst case scenario, and what he ment was probably 60% of those infected (which is then only a few percent of the entire population). And these mortality rates appear quite overblown anyways since that are not 60% of the healthy but all the elderly that already weakend and get killed also count into this statistic (which is tragic but now where near as tragic as it sounds at first).
That said, well the birdflu is mostly a media scare right now, which might or might not become a problem in the future (for humans).

Swampbug - that video is not very convincing. Thymerisol isn't used in Vaccines any more, and nobody has ever shown a causal link between mercury and autism anyway. Since Thymerisol was removed from vaccines, rates of Autism incidence have steadily increased - showing that it was never a factor. The true cause for the increasing cases of autism are most likely better detection rates, and broader classifications (so that syndromes like Aspbergers are classified as types of autism). Read wikipedia. All of it, not just the bits on vaccines.

It's easy for us to take vaccines for granted because they don't seem to do anything obvious - but try visiting a country where vaccines aren't common, like India, and notice all the people dying of polio. You don't see polio much in countries that vaccinate. Please think carefully and educate yourself on the subject before spreading that video further.

MoP: What, you haven't seen the insane amount of 'get the jab' advertising a while back? The UK seems just as crazy about flu shots, really. I don't think I've had one since I was young either though, or not at all. Besides, having the flu is sort of like being high, but on the cheap! Woo, spinning rooms.

I live in a student infested area near my uni and everyone here seems to get colds or the flu at least once a year. We call it freshers flu as thats what some people say is the source lol. Some of my family had flu jabs, didnt do anything much for them, they still have the same problems everyone else gets with flus and colds. I say oranges are much cooler than flu jabs laugh.gif
