i will be there for sure, insomniac is on the board, might be looking at portfolios on saturday, still up in the air on if i have to do any actual work.
there is tons of stuff we can do. K-town is close to hollywood, awesome korean bbq, cheap booze and cute asian girls for the win win.. i also live in a hip japanese part of town outside santa monica, awesome sushi, karaoke, and cute asian girls for the win win win... i am up for anything and might have room for one more in my car for what follows, also i am sure i can get cochtl to to come and bring pior.
this is going to get stupid.
Oooh, hurry curry! After moving out of Santa Monica I've had a craving for hurry curry so bad that I've driven up for the weekend just to have dinner there.
I'm assuming Arsh lives near the asian gauntlet on Sawtelle.
Aight, looks like myself and a couple other Mythic folks will be in town Friday night through early Sunday evening (red-eye home). I'll try and remember to wear my polycount shirt on Saturday.
Didn't see this thread earlier, but I'll be there. Friday through monday morning, I'll have a rental car if anyone needs car pooling there're the back seats; possibly the front as well. Its an econobox though so all you tall americans be forewarned.
pior and me got dumped by rawkstar/arsh. it was a traumatic experience, 2 foreigners in a foreign and a gps that gives data by city name instead of zipcode. We ended up in some residential area where some guy apparently left a huge rock by the entrance of his home as a decorative ornament which finally doubled as a collision object for my rear bumper.Pior was close to tears with the whole feeling of being lost and confused while i nearly experienced a breakdown when we decided to have burger king for dinner.
dom, dude i am so sorry, but we got to eat pizza today and drive to the center of earth, that was pretty cool.
really cool time, met a lot of cool folks, cho was hilarious and a total perv, hawkpreys talk was awesome, also got a tour of blur with some polycounters and got to see some pretty hilarious animatics.
yeah, center of earth was really fun, especially when the gnomes started popping out. I was just being lame arsh, its all cool. I was pretty tired anyway, I had no idea driving 2 hours a day could be this tiring.
I also had an opportunity after the talk to have dinner with antropus and frank cho. cho is a super funny guy. It was fun, now I just wanna sleep and recover from the trauma of having to listen to 2 french man bicker (in french) during the trip.
So yeah it was great to meet up there and the presentations were good mines of information. The whole event has been DV recorded but only for archive purpose according to the Gnomon guy I talked to.
Many attendants took plenty of pictures some to the point of capturing each slide hence I wouldn't be surprised to see all that pop up on the internetz in a short time. Besides I took a handful of notes and diagrams during the most of the lectures, I'll try to clean that up soon and post it here.
Also... had the chance to have dinner with Frank Cho, Kris Costa and a few others (!) yesterday - a blast indeed!
Had a great time! There was a ton of great talent there and the Gnomon guys run a pretty smooth show... sorry we didn't get much time to hang out though:( Between the ES crew and some family time it was a really quick trip... Oh well, maybe in 2008;)
Anyone's coming? There might be tickets available still.
I plan to be there for the two days but unsure yet if I'll stay for the night over there, had no time to check friends and hotels hehe.
My camera was dying on me, ate up batteries in a snap thus I couldn't get a shot of the loading screen. Will post notes soon tho!
(no idea if this is allowed or not. But they never stated it was to be kept confidential)
Yeah but thats not enough.. Pior, c'mon man. Tell us exactly what you saw. IBL etc.. really do enough people give a shit? Maybe slightly more in Game dev but still. I want posing ability, basic poly editing, stuff to make *sculpting* easier.
100 million polys is straight up bullshit. I can only hit 2million on my PC, despite their 30million claim and even that runs like a dog. Sooo disappointed.
Materials, render presets
realtime IBL and reflections.
Texture layers, including realtime reflection/spec masks etc.
can handle up to 100 million polys (in reality probably less the 1/10 that without becomming a slideshow)
64bit support
Ooops sorry Sup :P Was planning to put all my notes together all at once but as far as new Mud2009 stuff goes I saw :
- Support for realtime shaders in the viewport (cubemaps, IBL, HDR support, and I suspect the ability to load a certain kind of .fx maybe)
-Ability to rotate the relflected environment and ability to lock it at the desired angle
- Realtime ambiant occlusion
- Realtime depth of field
- texture 'stamping' through strokes
- color painting (forgot to ask if the brush engine was anything close to photoshops)
- automatic 'little squares' unwrapping allowing to paint on an object that has not been unwrapped by hand
- ability to paint bumb, spec and diffuse maps (don't know if you can setup a material with a specific bump, spec and diffuse at the same time...)
- SteadyStroke (=lazymouse)
- More polies on screen
- x64
- Rewritten behaviour of some brushes (I think)
- New splash logo (that was horrible)
- New startup screen for quick access to basic scenes setup
so no resym, reconstruct subdiv, or transpose equivalents shown?
Beyond that sounds great, glad they're making so you can paint more then just diffuse, and have layers. Wonder if the steadystroke will be usable while painting...
Well Poly as a matter of fact it was not a bullet point presentation of the new stuff. It was the AD for the NFS games showing how he uses the new mud features when he works on automotive design - hence the emphasis on reflections and such. Since he showed the new tools as he needed them and only if he needed them we did not get to see everything for sure. For instance I didn't get to see the AO on a white model. It was more like, 'Oh btw there is realtime AO now!' he he turned it on and off on the model he was slapping texture stencils on. There wasn't many questions from the crowd, since the presentation was a bit dragging and it was late on sunday.
I can't wait for the mud guys to go through the new features one by one. Interface was similar to 1.07 as far as I can tell.

it was still fun though.
Today was much better. Hawkprey was awesome, the anatomy talk was very cool and Frank Cho was fucking hilarious.
