Realtime ambient shader for maya possible?

I was browsing through the Team Fortress 2 shading pdf http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications/2007/NPAR07_IllustrativeRenderingInTeamFortress2.pdf

I was wondering if it is possible to set up a real time shader in Maya to do what team fortresses shader does. Like making shaded areas and shadows cool not black, so it won't wash out texture detail. shaded areas also becoming more saturated.
