It's still designed to net MS the biggest chunk of the pie first and if anything is left over after they have feasted on the profits, you might get to make another game! Either way you go its getting hard for Indie Dev's to be indie much like its hard for a hillside to stay a hillside after someone finds gold on it. The rush is on, I bet more people find dirt under their fingernails then gold. But still an opportunity is an opportunity and it might work out to something good. But I wouldn't go into it with out a back up plan and an ass load of cash.
yeah I looked into this because I have game design university projects but it requires registration into the xla microsoft scheme and thats highly dubious, not for me thanks. There are some good open source graphics engines around which look interesting, or theres the modding scene and total conversions are sometimes pretty impressive. Flash and director 3D are starting to useful for online 3D but they are quite simplistic in terms of graphical capabilities. Steam also hosts some fairly indie efforts but Im sure there are catches as with xla.
Im making a game in Macromedia Director at the moment because my lecturer is really knowledgable in lingo and the only other real option was flash.
